Product Description

In a bold political move, Sir Branford claims a handmaid as his bride instead of the expected princess in an attempt to spark a war. Poor Alexandra knows little of how to behave as the wife of a future king and knows nothing of the man who is suddenly her husband.

Alexandra knows she is being used as a pawn and must do her best to avoid scheming noblewomen and the scorned princess, accept her position as her husband ascends to the throne, and overcome her fears of the man with whom she now shares a bed.

Sir Branford is determined to have it all – the kingdom, a wife of his choosing, and the revenge he seeks for the death of his father. He doesn’t expect the naïve handmaid to become more important than he ever could have foreseen.

Shay, I'M still getting used to the main characters not being "you know who". It's like you've fine tuned the novel. Brilliant and so "can't put this down" !!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware 26 August 2016

I rate this 2.5 stars. 5 stars for the story and 1 star for the 7 novellas which will end up costing more than $20. I would have paid a great deal for this book but felt I was duped into buying these novellas in order to finish the story. This is the first negative review I have ever written but felt it necessary to warn those who love books. Don't know who is at fault, the author or publisher. Whoever it is, it is a shame.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shay Savage does it again. Another stellar story that has this reader wanting all the books. 1 June 2016

So three years ago I read my first historic/period type romance. It was Worth by Shay Savage. Fast forward a few years and I read a few sci-fi type romances, again... Shay’s doing. This woman keeps pushing me out of my comfort zone and every time she proves that if the writing is solid, the story has a hook, the reader (no matter how convinced it isn’t their thing) will love it.

The Handmaid is the first in a seven part serial series called Unexpected Circumstances. But don’t fear the dreaded serial! There is a steady release schedule and pre-orders are up for book two & three already. Sir Branford is offered up a prize of his choice, only, he doesn’t want the princess... he wants her handmaid. In a swift political move, Branford insults the neighboring King and his plan is set into motion. But Alexandra is nothing like he expected. He didn’t intend to have any feelings for his new bride, but things quickly change.

This was a quick read, that instantly held my attention from page one. When I hit the last page, I was craving part two, I might have stomped my foot, maybe, a few times....

Shay Savage does it again. Another stellar story that has this reader wanting all the books. Now, since this is just the first installment of the series, I am hovering at a four star read – I think as the story progresses and the full plot is exposed, this has potential to get to a five star – but we are still in early days of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing beginning 3 June 2016

I'm a little late to the party with this book. I have never read the first version of this story so all I had to go on was what my friends have told me. And they raved about this story!

This story took me back to the days of historical romance when I first started reading. Good old bodice ripping historical romance. The handmaiden is the first part of a series of serials and while short in length, it gives us just enough to whet your appetite and leave you wanting more. A hot, alpha nobleman, a handmaiden that is is as intriguing as she is smart, and political games that will rival the politicians of today. What isn't there to love? What I do like about this, is that you cannot figure out the angle of the characters just yet. It does make it a bit hard to get a good read on them, and I'm sure that's done on purpose. The story is told in Alexandra's point of view, so we do get to know her much more than we do Sir Branford, and I feel for the poor girl. She is thrust in the middle of a game that she has no idea how to play, in a world in which she has only played a small part. I cant wait to see how this story plays out and how the chemistry between Alexandra and Sir Branford grows.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction is my new favorite type of book 31 May 2016

I am new to the genera of what would be considered a historical fiction. I must say that If they are all like this book then I have been missing out. This is the story of a young handmaiden, Alexandria, who is thrust into the world of Kings and Queens. Bradford has chosen her as a bride to start a war. What neither of them expected was the growing feeling that began to spark between them.

This book hit all the right notes for me. I absolutely love the slow build up to in their relationship. It feels so fast but painfully slow at the same time. You get to feel all of Alexandria's scared and confusing feelings as this new marriage is literally thrust upon her. She is so torn by what is considered her duty vs what her mind and body are willing to let her do. And Bradford is just melt your heart and body delicious.

Or course every book needs some suspense and there are certainly some situations that lead you to believe certain things are going on behind closed doors where Bradford is concerned. This just leads to more suspense.

Overall I thing this was a great first book in a series. It definitely left me salivating for the second book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Handmaiden 2 June 2016

I LOVE Shay Savage! This is truly an author like no other. She simply gives a unique twist to romance each and every time. This is the beginning for Alexandra, a handmaiden and Lord Branford, heir to the thrown. Their union is spur of the moment and a political move for the future King. Alexandra has been thrust into a world of nobility. While her husband prepares for war with a neighboring country Alexandra wages a war inside herself. She is fighting with being the dutiful wife but her innocence is keeping her fearful of the unexpected. I love that I read a synopses of a Shay book and think this one will probably not be for me, but each and every time she proves me wrong. No matter what the plot line is, the characters, the setting, or even the time period she pulls you in with the first page. So excited for more to come!
