The Undoing Project is a very different kind of love story – a story of two geniuses whose minds became inseparable, creating a transcendent synergy.
It has taken the genius of Michael Lewis to tell this story, combining his expertise in the intellectual subject matter (now called “behavioural economics”) with the contextual history of Kahneman and Tversky’s Israeli origins and their later personal lives. A rare combination of frankness, sensitivity and understanding.
Having a fairly good knowledge of behavioural economics, I did not find Lewis’s descriptions of the subject and its interplay with the protagonists difficult. As with many other biographies, I’m not sure how much an inexpert reader would miss.
Perhaps as a primer to reading The Undoing Project, I would recommend Kahneman’s 2012 book “Thinking, Fast and Slow”, which I would rate as the best written “non-fiction” book I have ever read.

Forty years ago, Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky wrote a series of breathtakingly original papers that invented the field of behavioral economics. One of the greatest partnerships in the history of science, Kahneman and Tversky's extraordinary friendship incited a revolution in Big Data studies, advanced evidence-based medicine, led to a new approach to government regulation, and made much of Michael Lewis's own work possible. In The Undoing Project, Lewis shows how their Nobel Prize-winning theory of the mind altered our perception of reality.

How do you turn an obscure story related to academia into a gripping page turner? I don't know, but the author did just that. I finished the book better informed, with an appreciation of the academic world and how people from totally different backgrounds can still relate, and yet still totally entertained. Win win.

Very interesting biography and introduction to the important field of behavioural economic
Reviewed in Australia on 30 December 2016Verified Purchase
Very interesting human interest biography of two unique and quirky scientists who complemented each other in remarkable ways. This book provides a very interesting introduction to the field of behavioural economics that is currently making a huge impact on the effective implementation of important government and corporate policies that can benefit many. As usual Michael Lewis - as in Moneyball and The Big Short - makes this an interesting read.

This is an excellent book about two amazing people, well done to the author for telling their story so well. Although the book covered a reasonably complex topic it was really well presented in a simple way.

Fascinating, larger than life characters who changed the world in so many ways. The book itself was so easy to read, I only wish I had known about this stuff decades ago. It apples to everyone and should be taught at school. Failing that it should be compulsory for a Tertiary education.

Nice story about great men but not really worth it
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 August 2018Verified Purchase
I read Liar's Poker, Big Short and Flash Boys. The difference between these three books and "The Undoing Project" is that they all were a captivating story and pretty much the best source on the topic they covered (i.e. roots of mortgage crisis, the 07/08 credit crunch and HFT) while this book offers neither. There's no captivating plot nor is it a very informative book.
It's a nice story but I just can't justify investing hours of my time to read it, while I could just pick up anything written by the authors or a good novel. In short, you're better off reading Thinking Fast and Slow to learn about many of the Kahneman and Tversky's findings (it's an excellent life-changing book).
I give it 3 stars because if nothing else it's a decent homage to Kahneman and Tversky, two important figures of the last century's science.

Intellectual fast food but less fun

People who are self-consciously very smart occasionally make for enjoyable subjects but not here. This is a tale of two (now famous) Israeli psychologists who developed analysis and theories on why people make the decisions they do, uncovering unconscious biases like loss aversion and developing ideas like prospect theory. And doubtless they have helped to feed the mass market publishing industry that is now known as "smart thinking". Like a lot of content in that category, I came away thinking what a load of hocus pocus. But maybe I am saying this because I am unconsciously biased against people that are smarter than me......

A springboard to greater knowledge

Lewis writes about very complicated issues in a wonderfully concise and simple way, dropping in various stories that really encapsulate the point he is trying to make.
As a result, I have finished this book and since gone on to read other books about this subject - he really has set off a chain reaction in me to understand this absorbing subject.
Of course, this is way too complicated to ever think that you have this theory sussed, but what Lewis does is give you a high level view, give you good background information and then explain it in a way that the general public can appreciate.
And thank goodness, because the small parts that I have understood, will hopefully lead to fuller understanding over time and other books.
However, do not under estimate the stories regarding the partnership of Kahneman and Tversky. Amazing individuals and complicated people, who forged an unexpected partnership that changed the psychological and economic world.

A book dealing with research into the limitations and pitfalls of human reasoning should not consist of a series of dodgy anecdotes woven into an improbable narrative. Unfortunately this book is that and more: sadly, it’s also a fictional account of recent Israeli history that casts doubt on the author’s ability to draw on high-quality sources. Give this a miss and read ‘Thinking, Fast and Slow’ instead.

Brings humanity to the world of academia
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 January 2017Verified Purchase
I already had a good understanding of the work of Tversky and Khaneman prior to reading this book. For those new to the field of Behavioural Economics this may not be the best starting point, nor is it intended to be.
What this book achieves is to take their work and set it within a narrative structur. In doing so, it gives it context, makes it easier for the layperson to understand and adds humanity to an academic field.
The book is, of course, beautifully written. It flows with an ease making it almost impossible to put down.
If Michael Lewis should read this review, I would like to offer him my heartfelt gratitude for making the fascinating work of these incredible men come alive.
This is my most-prized book of 2016 and will be treasured forever. My one and only criticism is the frustrating lack of an index. An irrational decision in itself.
