Product Description

Brian Christofferson gives a glimpse into the life of an airmail pilot who flew a nightly route over the rugged terrain of the Montana Rockies in an Aero Commander. The thrill of a trip with a daring young pilot taking off, before an approaching thunderstorm closes the airport, is palpable as is a smooth ride in that same old aircraft across the darkness of the Bob Marshall Wilderness on a clear night, a pause to enjoy the Milky Way while on the last leg home. The same Bob Marshall Wilderness is featured on a backpacking trip across the middle of its majesty with three of his friends. The day job of this airmail pilot-turned husband and father was even more challenging; the book shows what it’s like to raise children in Northwest Montana. The age-old wonder about the grass on the other side of the fence grips this pilot too, when contemplation about abandoning the tense excitement of the cockpit for the challenge of a classroom takes him along another path. As a memoir, this story is part action, part family and a has a component of tragedy as well. The danger of flying small planes is demonstrated in how the freight dog mentality of getting the job done at any cost or the lack of attention to detail led to the deaths of 10 of his fellow warriors. Two of those deaths rock his world from an unforeseeable direction.
