The Two-Bear Mambo (Hap and Leonard #3) by Joe R. Lansdale, has the two vigilantes looking for a very attractive black woman, who has gone missing in Grovetown. Hap’s former girlfriend, Florida Grange, was inquiring about the jail-cell death of a famous black musician in the KKK-controlled town. Of course, Lenard, a black homosexual, and Hap, his white best straight friend, tangle with both the sheriff and the Klan in Grovetown, and their demise seems certain. This is Lansdale’s third Hap and Leonard novel and it is another great read for those who can withstand East Texas good-ole-boy behavior, extremely colorful/crude language and customs, and brutal violence. Hap and Lenard are two great characters and Lansdale provides wonderfully written dialogue for them. Of course, Lansdale is also an exceptional story teller, and this compelling story maintains the reader’s interest and anxiety. This is my fifth Hap and Leonard novel and I will certainly being visiting them again.

I suggest you read the "Hap and Leonard" novels from the start. Like anything, it will make more sense and have greater resonance that way. That being said, this was one satisfying read. Lansdale's dry humor, Texas wit, and almost sacrilegious delight in destroying boundaries will keep most readers coming back for more. If that doesn't work for you, the satisfaction of the bad guys getting what's coming to them, will. Nobody kicks butt like Hap and Leonard. And nobody does it with such reckless glee and abandon than Landsdale. I'm saying Joe R Lansdale kicks some serious literary butt. Always a wild ride, but also filled with a sensitivity that will surprise you. Long live Hap and Leonard. And Lansdale too.

I have gotten tired of Hap's whining about who he hurt. That coupled with his left wing taking pokes at conservatives leaves me cold. Leonard is the more realistic of the two.

I feel like I just went 3 rounds with a Golden Gloves champ. This book wore me out. Racism, gays, bestiality, murder, mayhem, the Klan, torture .... wow. I expect some of these things in gritty novels, but not necessarily all of them all, piled on each other.

If you can get through it, it's a great novel. Everything fits together. Chekov would like it. But you have to gird your loins for this one. It isn't an easy book to read.
