What a tangled web of affairs....uh literally. I bought this book after seeing the Dateline special "Twisted Faith". This twisted story of lies, sex, murder, and deceit takes place on Bainbridge island in Washington state. Nick, a young minister in his early 20's, has a lot more on his mind than seeing souls saved in the church. Oh he definitely seems to love the women in the church.....but it's most definitely not a "godly love". Although, he's a married man....Nick makes sure that he's always there for the "needy" attractive young women in the church. He even goes so far as to become involved with the head pastor's daughter. There is definitely nothing god-like about his behavior. He becomes involved with a married woman in the church ......this married woman is known and respected as a prophet in the church. Every time you turn around she's proclaiming some type of prophetic word she supposedly has received from God. Incredibly, she starts telling Nick that God has revealed to her that his wife Dawn will die soon.
Well, lo and behold Dawn ends up dying in a house fire.....and Nick plays the part of the greiviving widow. Yep, you guessed it....He doesn't turn to God for comfort in his time of need. He turns to several women in the church for "comfort". He doesn't care if the women are married or not. He has the audacity to lure these women into sexual relationships by claiming it's all part of God's plan. He's a narcissist who only cares about getting what he wants.....damn anyone who gets in his way.
By the time it's over with he has emotionally devastated numerous women.....broken up a marriage....and caused the church to split in two.
There were several aspects that are missing from this book that I normally appreciate in true crime books. The book doesn't delve much into Nick's past. Most true crime books I've read really dig into the perpetrators past and you get a good feel of their psychological make-up. This book barely touches his past.....which makes it difficult to determine what led to him becoming the person he became.
For the most part the book details all of his sexual relationships. It doesn't go deeply into the police investigation or the trial. It basically skips over these areas for the most part.. Right at the end the book gives a small amount of information on how one of Nick's ladies turn him in for murdering his wife. Most true crime books I've read go into a good amount of detail about the police investigation and the trial. I enjoy these aspects as it presents a well rounded picture of everything. I felt this was lacking from the book. Also, there could have been more information about the life and person of his wife Dawn. The book doesn't give much detail on her.....I walked away feeling like I barely know anything about the victim. This left the story feeling incomplete to me as well.
I would recommend reading this book just to get an inside view of how a wolf in sheep's clothing can manipulate women and entire church by using the "God card". It will open up your eyes to some of the ways people can twist God and His word for their own sick and selfish purposes. Overall, it was an interesting read and I'd recommend it.
