I love how succinctly this book describes what so many creatives struggle to understand and transcend (and many never do). This book cuts to the chase and does so with style, grace and depth. Steven's explanation of the connection between art and addiction is on point and brought me a greater sense of understanding and compassion for some of the addicts in my life who have so much talent, yet are stuck in self-destructive loops.
It has helped inspire me to show up for my purpose more consistently and embrace the long term game of being a creative for life.
I highly recommend this book to entrepreneurs, changemakers, truthseekers, artists and visionaries out there who battle with self-doubt and feel at times like throwing in the towel on their dreams. If you let it sink in and apply the practice, it will help you!

It may be my short attention span, but having short chapters that make a point without labouring it are a dream to me.
Pressfield makes the points that all creatives need to hear and also those aspiring to fulfill their creative potential as Pros.
Pursuing art as a pro is a lonely journey. It has to be in order to do your work and overcome your internal barriers. Nobody else can do it for you. This book like the War of Art is a must read for those wanting to make that leap.

Very few have the style, you do, Steven.
The way you communicate with me, the Reader, makes me think you lovingly (in your own definition) crafted these words perfectly for me.
This book alone helped me structure the (second) book I've been struggling to find direction for.
67,000+ words, 111 days of continuous writing inside the abyss and 400ish hours with Steven King like anti-holiday dedication have no been rewarded with light, love and now, a clear direction.
Love your work - thanks a mil.

beatnik-influenced style and attitude toward life that any Kerouac fan will enjoy, and his humility in his early failed efforts
Reviewed in Australia on 6 May 2016Verified Purchase
This is not a "how-to" book with an actionable plan or tips, it is a quiet meditation on that point when you need to decide to take yourself and your dreams more seriously and really begin to take the risks and the off-road path toward dedicating yourself to at least give those dreams a chance to take root. The author has a bohemian, beatnik-influenced style and attitude toward life that any Kerouac fan will enjoy, and his humility in his early failed efforts is very touching. It is a short but inspiring little book that will help motivate a dreamer to become a doer. I liked it more by the end than I thought I would while reading it, and am keen to read what other people say is his better work with the same inspiring message but in more detail, 'The War of Art'.

This book will remind you why you are doing the work. It will call you out on your own BS, it will kick you in the pants and get you moving. It’s time to ask yourself, are you an amateur or a Pro?

The writing is ironically a bit unpro but basically nails how you have to think to achieve what you want to achieve

Everyone should read this. Concise, direct, applicable to everyone who is hungry. Can’t wait to read more of his stuff. Highly recommended.

Short but sweet, a worthy followup to the War of Art. Each chapter is like poetry extolling us to listen to our inner voice and reveal our true selves.

Writer rocket fuel

I swear Steven pressfield is Socrates incarnate. There is something about the way he shapes sentences on the page that attacks the mushy, dark and confused parts of my mind and realigns them. His books are always a spark, a flame and fuel to my motivation. Not because he's soft and lovingly caresses the artist ego into working again. But because he punches you in the tit and tells you to get on with it. One of my favourite parts is when he says he praises us for hitting rock bottom... because at rock bottom there is only ourselves and he's right!

get your creative mojo back with this book

I am a fan of Stephen's books. This one goes to the heart of resistance, and sort of manages to bypass any excuses you may have put in place for not taking your 'art' seriously (when I say this, I mean any endeavour you are pursuing). This book is about attitude, about shifting into a different perspective and committing. For those who are reticent about really digging in and getting their story or product out in the world... for the procrastinators, the hesitators and the non-completers, this will help to 'gear up'.
There's a poetry to this book. And an emphatic call that is actually compelling. It will help contextualise the excuses, will let you see how you've been talking yourself out of doing what you long to do. So if you're frustrated by your own inactivity or the nagging call of creative energy that you just don't act on, get this. It should do the trick of inspiring you to just crack on with it. And if it doesn't, then maybe you are still content to just 'dabble'.
Enjoy.

A load of narcissistic clap trap

This book is short (in hindsight that's a good thing). It has so many great reviews but I really don't understand why. The takeaway from it is basically show up, do the graft and act like whatever it is that you want to do (writing, art, acting etc) is your profession even if you are still doing a different job. Even if you "fail" ie don't get published, don't get cast etc....keep going.
There, I just saved you £5.

An Inspiring Read

For all those who know they have a true calling, be it writing, painting, parenthood or other, this book will change your mindset from that of the amateur to that of the pro. I'm a huge fan of The War of Art and read it once a year to remind myself of its principles. Now I can add this to my annual reads, to remind myself of what I can become if I turn up and do the work, if I turn pro. A great read-grab your copy without hesitation.

I quite liked it but felt Pressfield didn't really nail the nature ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 March 2015Verified Purchase
This book was exactly what I needed, as I had tumbled into a self-pitying, creative slump. It was precisely the wake-up call I needed, and it has had an immediate impact on my creative energy. I read The War on Art a few years ago. I quite liked it but felt Pressfield didn't really nail the nature of resistance; he just seemed to be saying that you should grit your teeth and get on with it. Turning Pro is more nuanced, in spite of its crisp, short sections. Like a lot of books such as this, the impact will depend on the receptivity of the reader. I had been searching for something to help shake me out of the doldrums for quite some time. This book certainly hit that mark for me.
