Easy to read, some interesting issues but the plot isn’t particularly gripping
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 September 2019Verified Purchase
The main problem for me was that too much of the book was taken up with the detective’s private life, even going back to her schooldays. The plot was pretty standard fare because although I didn’t guess who the murderer was, there were many characters with the same set of motives. I would, though, read another book in the series, because the setting is interesting and having got all the personal stuff out of the way, the author might concentrate more on the plot.

Too basic and formulaic, despite the multicultural aspect.

I was disappointed in the book. I usually like multi cultural stories but this book felt forced and the characters slightly wooden. There was no depth to the descriptions if the community and it was tailored to beginners abiut the subject. The plot was slow and not very inventive.

A tense page-turner

A really refreshing take on the police procedural which explores multicultural East London with a deft touch. DI Rahman's character is refreshingly well-drawn and although there's lots going on in her family life it doesn't get in the way of her investigative powers. Newham evokes the setting brilliantly and captures community life and tensions with ease. Looking forward to her next book!

A bit dull
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 March 2020Verified Purchase
I’ve given it two stars as it was reasonably well written, but a lot of it’s content was riding on the bandwagon of the recent politically correct ethnic minority trend which I found very odious. The central character of the story clearly had a chip on her shoulder as a victim of racial discrimination and bullying both directly and indirectly. It painted a bleak and depressing picture of modern multi cultural London. I gave up about half way through as the primary storyline about the murders was not remotely gripping and it got to the point I didn’t care who had done it or why. Plus most of the main characters were bland and flaky. This hybrid of crime detective and banging the ethnic minority drum just doesn’t work.

Good plot

An interesting police procedural book set in multi-cultural East London. I liked the characterisation of DI Maya Rahman and the fact that we got to know about her personal life within the story. It was a fast-paced tale following the murder of the local school headmistress.
The investigation kept me enthralled and I doubted almost all the main characters at some stage!
Highly recommend.
