On the cover there are comments about the book and one of them says this novel is "either a tragi-comedy or comic tragedy". Don't be fooled: it's neither. Indeed it's not funny at all, and it's about as tragic as a tin of sardines.
And neither is it even mildly erotic. It may be about a cross-dresser who visits a prostitute and seems to inhabit the demi-monde of Weimar Germany but it manages to paint the scene in flat colours. Moreover none of the characters has a personality. Frankly, it's boring. It's also unnecessarily convoluted and confusing.
So, why have I given it two stars and not one? Well, despite the above, there is, potentially, an interesting story in there. This could be turned into a very good film - with the right screenplay. But the book as it stands is a bit of a stinker.
