How Travelon Anti-Theft bags protect your valuables and your identity
Locking Straps & Compartments
Locking Straps allow you to lock your bag to a stationary object like a chair. This protects against grab-n-go thieves.
Locking Compartments protect against pickpockets commonly found in restaurants, shopping areas and crowded venues.
All body panels (front, sides, bottom and back) have a stainless-steel mesh that lies under the outer fabric and between the lining. This protects you against slash-n-grab thieves commonly found in crowds and transportation stations.
Within the straps are stainless steel cables that run the full length of the strap and protect against slash-n-grab thieves commonly found in parking or isolated areas.
RFID Blocking Slots & Pockets
Many credit cards, identity cards, and all passports contain RFID chips with your valuable information on them. Every Travelon Bag Has RFID Blocking Card And Passport Slots And Pockets to protect you against identity thieves. Common identity theft occurs when a thief with a small hand-held scanner walks by you and skims the information off your cards or passport that lie unprotected in your wallet or bag. These everyday identity thieves can be found everywhere in the world - which is why this type of theft occurs so frequently.

Last summer my family traveled throughout Italy. It was a wonderful experience and my mother, sister and myself all purchased Travelon cross-body bags. While the bags were totally functional and we loved all the pockets and features, our shoulders were killing us after a long day of touring despite switching shoulders and carrying the minimal : phone, sunglasses, lipstick, lightweight scarf (for going into churches), external battery, snack bar, and passport.
So this year before our trip throughout Spain, I decided a small day pack would be a better idea. After whittling down Travelon's bags I decided on this one and the Signature Slim Backpack. I ordered both to see which one I would prefer. I packed both with what I would typically take with me on a day of touring in Europe and compared them.
The Regular Travelon Backpack: Has a lot going for it. It is lightweight, relatively compact (smaller than a regular backpack, but not as small as a fashion backpack), It has a lot of compartments, 2 holsters for water bottles (which I will definitely need to be carrying) , padded shoulder straps (making carrying it all day much easier), and the largest section is several inches across so you can pack a lot more into it such as a lightweight jacket, even a sandwich etc. Practically I think this is the better of the two backpacks, it is more functional and has a lot more room in it. It's sturdy. It also weighs less when empty which is surprising since it is larger. However being that it is a bit larger it could feel a bit bulky to carry around all day in the summer heat of Europe. It's also not the most "cute" or stylish bag but it isn't bad looking. More of a sporty look.
Travelon Signature Slim Backpack: It's definitely the cuter of the two backpacks - it's smaller by several inches in both height and diameter, the material is smooth and less textured than the regular backpack . Like the name says the profile of this bag is slim so it does not appear at all bulky even when full of your traveling supplies. The main compartment is narrow but it fit everything I needed into it: phone, external charger, snacks, makeup bag, passport, scarf and a water bottle. I wouldn't want to carry more than this on a long day of touring as every little bit of weight matters. Less is definitely more! My main issue with this bag is the weight. Despite it being technically smaller, it weighs more when empty. I attribute it to all the metal on the straps and perhaps the mesh inside the straps. I was hoping "smaller" also meant lighter, but in this case, when I put the same items in both packs and weighed them - they weighed exactly the same : 2lbs. The other issue is that the clips on this backpack are much trickier to open for me, they are not as efficient as the regular backpack. Which may be good for pickpockets, but could also see this being a pain in the butt when I am trying to get something out of the back quickly.
I am going to decide later today which to keep and which to return. I'll report back.
When fully loaded the bag still only weighed 11lbs and didn't knock me down or make me look ridiculously overburdened and clanking with gear! On the underside of the top flap is a zippered pocket that I didn’t use and I also didn’t use the credit card and passport slots in the front flap pocket. That pocket also has pen slots and a narrow pocket that my phone would have fit into if I chose. My travel documents will fit there nicely. My IPad easily fit upright in the 9 1/2” wide inner slot in the main compartment which is not padded but more to keep your tablet from falling over the other contents. The main compartment can open to 11 1/2” at its widest so keep that in mind if you intend this bag for your laptop. Using packing cubes kept things organized while leaving space on each side at the wider bottom to stash snacks baggies or other small items.
Let me also vanquish one common complaint that Travelon must have heard often enough to fix: The straps are completely adjustable. In fact each can be shortened to only 18” from shoulder attachment to hip or extended all the way to 32”.
The straps are nicely padded and backed with breathable mesh though the back of the bag itself is not. It appears to be sturdily constructed. My wish list to make this the perfect bag would include changing the water bottle pocket to elasticize mesh, adding a sternum &/or waist strap, breathable mesh for the whole back, using dual zippers on top and front flap openings, and offering more interesting colors. Where’s a nice lively red?!
Lastly, some commenters have ridiculed the size of the bag as not being adequate apparently because they are big people. Their size doesn't mean this is a bad bag, it just means they didn’t read the specs to choose an appropriate bag for their stature. And take a look at what I fit into it!
Once the bag gets through the shake down trip and has a few more miles on it I’ll come back and comment on it’s durability. Happy trails!
This bag wears so well, and it's compact size obviously belies it's full carrying capabilities. The shoulder straps are well padded and fully adjustable, and the included mini flashlight is a nice bonus. Highly recommend!
*I can't vouch yet for the bag's safety features (and hopefully I'll never have to), but if I ever do I will add to my review accordingly.
