Product Description

Updated and © 2017. This book is highly recommended by a transgender icon and modern transgender pioneer, Dr. Renee Richards. She wrote, "Dear Joanne.thank you for sending me Transgender Complete. I read it and was impressed with how comprehensive and erudite a discussion it was of all things 'transgender'. Much has happened since my days of involvement in the subject-especially interesting for me to read about all the research in neuro biology as well as recent advances in diagnosis and care for children and young people with transgender issues. Congratulations." - Dr. Renee Richards

Transgender Complete is an important and complete resource for transgender people who are seeking more information about themselves; those who know a transgender person and wish to understand them; and students and professionals in the fields of psychotherapy and medicine who want to know more about the thoughts and lives of transgender people.

This book includes every aspect of transgenderism from children to seniors and from immigration to sports; original research; and over 180 comments from transgender women and men that express their feelings regarding various issues. It also includes: the transgender relationship to gay/lesbian, bisexual, and asexual people;

TRANSGENDER WOMEN AND MEN can better understand themselves; learn their gender conflict origins; how to maintain better relations with their loved ones, friends and employers; the methods to avoid the perils of coming out; and much more.

THOSE WHO KNOW A TRANSGENDER PERSON will learn the cause of transgenderism, why it is kept a secret, their biological need to express their inner gender, and suggestions to help maintain loving relationships.

EMPLOYERS will learn why transgender employees are ideal employees and how simple and effortless it is to integrate (or re-integrate) them into any organization.

STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONALS IN EDUCATION, PSYCHOTHERAPY AND MEDICINE will gain a keen insight into the thoughts, lives, difficulties, and needs of transgender men and women.

Joanne Borden, the author and Winner of the Best Storyteller award in 2012 at NYC’s Fresh Fruit Festival, based this book on 4 years of full-time research. The style of writing and scattering of transgender people's comments make this book an easy read.

Some unsolicited comments received via email are:

“The first thing I noticed is the great amount of research and facts and how
clearly they are presented. The next thing was how it answered so many
questions that have puzzled me all my life. I now understand myself and
feel better knowing I am not a freak.”

“This is an amazing book. I realize my daughter is not sick but needs my
help facing the world full of people who didn’t read this book. I still can't believe
it took a book for me to understand my own child.”

"I want you to know that I have been enjoying reading your book. I appreciate all the work you put into it . . .It's obvious all the research you've done on the book and it's informative and entertaining."

"You cannot imagine how I am enjoying your book. I am about to finish it but I am sure I am going to read it again several times. I am pretty convinced that it has helped [me] like nothing before."

"I have started reading your book and . . . I am so impressed with the amount of research you have done with your book. It has [already] answered some of my questions regarding my gender origins."

"[I] am very impressed by the amount of time you must have spent in research. This is some piece of work, and while I didn't curl up with the copy as yet, it appears to be easy reading for a very complex subject."
(A non-transgender person)

"I just finished reading your book and think it is the best I've ever read regarding the transgender issues. It should be a must read for everyone!"

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost Required Reading for Transgender People 15 May 2014
By Paige Ellen - Published on Amazon.com

I have a love/dislike relationship with this book. I found that it provides a large body of information that is, I believe, important and necessary to those who consider themselves to be transgendered. Joanne Borden competently covers every aspect of being transgender that I,a transgender woman myself, could possibly imagine as relevant; she is VERY thorough. She takes into consideration medical, biological, physiological, cultural, psychological and sociological aspects of the transgender person's life. She does not try to reduce very complex issues and situations to simple explanations. She makes it clear when she's stating facts and when she is speculating. I believe this book is a very valuable contribution to the literature, in particular for those who are new to understanding the phenomenon of transgenderism or are seeking to expand their knowledge. This is a book for the public and is easily readable. There is some discussion of biology and physiology as pertains to embryonic and fetal development, but I had no trouble comprehending it.
I believe this is a very important book.
Here are my difficulties with the book: call me picky, but I am appalled by bad grammar. It is not all that difficult to get a book edited. There are also some common misspellings, and those tend to get my goat as well. Last, the paragraph and sentence structure is sometimes clumsy. This matters to me because such failings take away from the authority of the book and the material contained within. Ms Borden, it is obvious, has done a tremendous amount of research and has spent much time in reflection on her very valuable work. For me, the flaws at which I have picked distract the reader and that is unfortunate. I can only hope that the book will sell well enough (as it well should) to allow for an edited and updated 2nd edition. This is scholarly work and should be received with the respect it deserves. I would have given it 5 stars, but the flaws I mentioned detract one half star, but I cannot give that rating, so 4 stars it is.
On a personal level and as a transgender woman, I want to thank Joanne Borden for the difficult and challenging work she did in writing this wonderful book. I am cynical by nature (we all have to protect ourselves somehow) and her last chapter, concerning how she hopes things will progress in the culture in the days to come, really set off my cynical side. I just want her to know that I hope she is right on every count and my life is devoted to bringing them to fruition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 26 October 2016
By Badger - Published on Amazon.com

This is a book about transgender people, but it is certainly NOT "complete." The author is a transwoman, and there is a very strong bias toward information pertaining to transwomen and not transmen throughout the book. Much of the writing, especially in later chapters, is solely a recounting of personal experiences by the author. If you are looking for a book on the intricacies of medical interventions and experiences for transwomen AND transmen, this is not the book to choose. This book is more narrative than concrete information.

I'm a psychotherapist specializing in MtF transgendered individuals, and I found this book to be very candid, entertaining, and enlightening. It certainly helped to make me more competent in this population! Highly suggested--it's also an easy read.

I have been struggling with this side of myself for awhile now. This helped me understand what's going on in my head somewhat. It also helped me understand I'm not alone and I'm not wrong for being like this. Even if that's how I feel. Thank you.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource! 8 June 2014

This is a wonderful resource for the trans community. Ms Borden has assembled a comprehensive volume of information on being transgender and which she explains very well, along with her own personal experiences, observations and theories. She cites all of her sources and makes clear when she is giving her own opinion. In fact there is so much information that some readers may be overwhelmed. This is one book that it pays to read twice simply because it contains so much information. I enjoyed it both times. I gave it four stars because of the editing issues (also noted by other reviewers) and the fact that it is not available in print and therefore not accessible to those without e-readers. I did notice that it has gone through several editions since I purchased it so perhaps the editing issues have been resolved. In any case it is a marvelous resource for trans people, especially those just coming to grips with their gender, as well as anyone seeking a fairly in depth introduction to the subject.
