The New Art of Structural Engineering is the focus of the book. There are three important concepts the efficiency in the use of material, economy of construction, and elegance of appearance. The book highlights examples of iconic bridges and larger projects that required engineering solutions for those construction project using materials such as steel, reinforced concrete, and prestressed concrete resulting in a structure that is pleasing to the eye.
David P. Billington (1927- 2018) wrote this book for non engineers. He wanted to educate the public and get them involved in the discussion of future large engineering projects in their community. He believed in transparency in competitive bidding with public input.
