Product Description

Jake Tucker is broken. At twenty-two, he went in to the Marine Corps a naïve, troubled youth. Nine years and four tours later, Jake finds himself back on US soil, though his mind remains firmly planted in the sands of Afghanistan with the men he left behind.

Wounded, chewed up and spat out by war, Jake has only his dog, Nuke, PTSD, and survivor’s guilt to keep him company. He’s lived every day for nine years wondering when it will be his last, but there’s little comfort in the fact that he’s still standing when his platoon isn’t.

Ellie Mason doesn’t have time for broken. She’s too busy trying to put food on the table. And keeping up with the demands of her autistic son, Spencer, is sometimes like fighting behind enemy lines. As if navigating the minefields of single parenthood isn’t enough, Ellie finds herself drawn to the quiet Marine who’s just as lonely as she is. But she’s loved damaged men before, and it left her wounded.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Fairhope, Alabama, Ellie and Jake find themselves running toward the sound of chaos.

Love is war.
Only the strong survive, and surrender is inevitable.

I've read a few books with a similar scenario - struggling single mother, autistic son, violent father and damaged-protective-male-type character, but, oh my! This storyline really grabbed me - what a touching, relatable and inspiring story! And as Carmen states, she likes to strip everything away and let her characters hit rock bottom before giving them an HEA...so prepare yourself for pain and angst with a lot of good times, too.
Carmen covers all the elements needed for a fantastic read, including - good plot, pace and character development. She also uses great imagery to create depth and meaning.
Jake Tucker is an ex-marine with PTSD and body scaring, so readers feel empathy for him early on. He doesn't have a lot to give, but he will give 'his all' to Ellie and Spencer. You can't ask more from a person than that. Jake is completely enamoured with Ellie. He also has an Assistance Dog, Nuke, who keeps him in check - just gorgeous.
Ellie Mason is the young mother doing it tough both financially and with the primary responsibility of caring for her young autistic son. She's a strong, tough, pragmatic, beautiful and a nurturing woman. She finds room in her heart for Jake, too. She adores him.
Spencer, Ellie's beloved son, while burdened with a disability, shows he has strength and purpose. He is endearing and admirable, too (his part in the story had particular meaning for me.)
An issue referenced in the book hit home for me - 'judgement' (although the book is not essentially about that.) I choked up with that issue, but I felt Carmen created the scope of emotions needed to address it and other circumstances, very well.
So, you can see why I thought the narrative was an inspiring story of hope and support. The main message I took away from the book is... everyone needs love, deserves love, can love and can be loved. I hope for the same for our little guy.
Thanks Carmen for weaving these issues through such a well-written narrative.

So I bought this book of Carmen Jenner's not reading the blurb or knowing what it was about, (I actually do this quite often) and I was sucked into this chaotic world. Toward the Sound of Chaos inclueds subjects like domestic violence, autism and PTSD but in a really sensitive and informative way.

This story made me feel so many emotions. At one point I had to actually put it down and collect myself after drying the bucket of tears I cried.

Toward the Sound of Chaos may be a difficult book for some people to read but for everyone else I definitely recommend you read it.

Toward the sound of chaos is another 5 star read by Carmen Jenner.
This book is a standalone, with so many emotional highs and lows, that I was crying both tears of sadness and joy.
Jake Tucker is a returned soldier, however his war is far from over. Ellie is a single Mum, who is doing it tough, with a special needs son. The story is beautiful, heartbreaking and real and I was left wondering how it would end. On many occasion I was left questioning if there could possibly be a HEA for these two.
Another well written story from the talented Ms Jenner.

I love a good damaged war hero read, and this was pretty banged up. Poor Jake, I felt so sorry for him and his demons. It is sad to think that this is so likely to be someones real life. The author did a good job on this one. It was very emotional. The challenges this couple faced was immense. The heroine was such a strong, loving person. As much as this was sad, it was also a very enjoyable read.

Jake, Ellie & Spencer are the beauty of fragility. Carmen's has tenderly woven their story of tragedy and unseen scars left from each of their own wars; Afghanistan, abuse, autism. A lovely story of life's immense complications, of the necessary sacrifice and the power of pride. It was a pleasure to read Jake, Ellie & Spencer find the inner strength to fight for life, for more, and never giving up on either! Gorgeous.

Was a good book. Took a long time before they stopped dancing around each other but I liked the premise of the book. I wish there was a bit more understanding surrounding Autism in the book. i thought the author could have done this better. I also thought the ending was a bit rushed but all in all a ok read.

Endearing, heartbreaking, soul hurting and soothing all in one beautiful book.
