Marie Patrick delivers another beautifully crafted Historical Western in her latest book Touch The Flame . In addition to spot-on description that puts the reader on the Rock Springs Ranch just outside of Corpus Christie, Texas in 1879, complete with scorching sun, wild horses and a family of cowboys to make any woman drool, Patrick also plays the characters' emotions like a master conductor.
Spenser Channing, a former Texas Ranger, has come home to run the ranch but must continuously resist his dad's manipulations to see him married again, something he doesn't want to do, especially after his late wife's ultimate rejection. But his life takes a strange turn when he discovers a beautiful young woman, sun burnt to a crisp and unconscious at the bottom of a ravine on the property. Finding a pouch full of diamonds on her unconscious form and one very large diamond with a strange flame inside, spurs his curiosity. But when the woman wakes up and can't remember who she is, he approaches her with caution, keeping the discovery of the diamonds a secret.
Reesa is panicked to realize she has no memory, the only clue to her identity, a bracelet around her wrist with the letters R E E S A on it. Once healed from her bad burns and cut feet, she settles into life at the ranch. Since the Channing family is used to Spenser bringing home strays, they more than welcome her into their fold. Her attraction to Spenser grows much faster than her memories, but her wish to know her past burns strong and leaves her frustrated, until the day she envisions blood on her hands, blood that almost suffocates her.
As Spenser and Reesa fight their mutual attraction for very different reasons, other forces begin to intrude upon the temporary normal life at the ranch. From Spencer's late wife's ex-lover, to the man obsessed with finding the diamond known as The Flame of Aphrodite, to new memories surfacing for Ressa, their steady friendship soon turns to true passion. But when Reesa remembers more scary memories and the Rangers come to investigate Spenser, their relationship begins to unravel until the night Reesa's husband comes to the Ranch to claim her.
Patrick is brilliant with the bread crumbs she leaves along the trail for the reader to follow, piecing together Reesa's and Spenser's pasts as the tension grows with their growing love and the real threat that can take it all away. The last hundred pages go by in the wink of an eye as the reader is swept along, anxiously turning the pages to discover the truth. I highly recommend this book to any lover of romance!
