Tessa is the queen of sexy, dirty talking heroes, who are still super romantic and swoony. Kyler Tate fit this description perfectly.
We first met Kyler Tate in book 3 of the Romancing the Clarksons series, Too Hard to Forget. He was an All-American college football star on Coach Elliott Brooks' team. Elliott was the hero of Book 3, and there was a big side plot about Kyler's family losing their family farm in Indiana, and how Coach and Peggy Clarkson worked together to help keep it from happening. Kyler really made a big impression on me, and I was so looking forward to his story. Kyler has been in love with the same girl since middle school, Bree Justice. But, in a shocking act right after senior prom, she breaks his heart and tells him she can't leave their small town, and that she won't be following him to college in Cincinnati. So, he goes on his own. But, his heart is still broken, and he still loves her. It's been 4 years, and when he gets drafted to a pro team in L.A., he knows that he can't go without her, so he goes back to his hometown to win her back.
Bree Justice is studying to be a veterinarian, and follow in her dad's family business. She loves her small town, and simple life, and she won't abandon her father and younger sister there for something more, the way her mother did. Every time Kyler comes back into town, she hides in her house the whole time to avoid seeing him. She knows that she's still not over him, and it hurts her to see him now, so she hides. But, this time, he comes into town unexpectedly and she runs into him at the diner. She is shocked by her reaction to him, and he catches her off guard. But, she has no idea what he has in store for them.
This was the sweetest, most romantic story, while still keeping with Tessa's dirty talking alpha style, and her heartfelt characters and relationships. Kyler was an amazing man. He knew what he wanted, and he wasn't leaving without getting it. He knows Bree better than anyone, so he knew she'd be skittish, and wouldn't want to be around him unless he forced the issue. They constantly challenge each other, and he loves her determination and drive. She realizes that Ky is still the one for her, but she is terrified by that prospect, as she still has no intention of leaving their small town. She had a lot of issues to overcome in this story, and I really liked the way it played out. This was a novella, so the pace was quick but it totally worked.
These characters were magic, and their love story made me swoon like whoa. Ky and Bree were a fantastic couple, and I loved the good they brought out in each other. I love the way they talked to each other, and how their shared history informed their present so much. There really is nothing like first (and last!) love. Their families were great side characters, as was Bree's best friend. She was hilarious. I truly enjoyed this book, and I am not so patiently awaiting the final book the Clarksons series! Belmont!!
