Product Description

Joel Anderson doesn’t take anything seriously.

Not his relationships, which have been few and far between since his brutal divorce. Not the drama of working in a tattoo parlor, which seems to be around every corner. When things get him down, he smiles and cracks a joke. But he’s not the kind of man you cross, or you’ll find yourself at the wrong end of his fists.

Annika Belousov takes everything seriously.

Like her job as a reality television producer, given that she typically has something to prove. Or her love life, which is defined by a series of requirements — affluent, ambitious, accomplished, to name a few. Definitely her family, who worked their whole lives to afford her every opportunity, a sacrifice she doesn’t take lightly. When she’s tapped to produce a reality show at Joel’s shop, she doesn’t think twice, just goes in for the kill, as if there were any other way.
The second Annika walks into Joel’s shop, he makes it his mission to crack her open, but she’s not having it. He’s all wrong — too crass, too hairy, too un-serious. But it doesn’t take her long to find out there’s more to him than smirks and tattoos. And what she finds could put her career and his heart on the line.

Not that Joel cares. Because for the first time in a long time, he’s found his tonic.

*** A standalone Romantic Comedy ***

When I first met Joel, who was at the time, little more than a background character in Last Call by Staci Hart, I remember thinking "There's a story there", and then didn't think much more of it. When I opened the pages of Tonic, I immediately realized that this is that story.

Having said that, it would probably seem too much of a stretch to even call them interrelated standalones. Patrick, the hero of that book works in Joel's tattoo shop, and as such, each appears in the other's books, but the stories themselves aren't at all intertwined. Each is a full on standalone that just happens to 'borrow' a character from the other.

Joel, after a doomed marriage years before, has shut himself off from all thoughts of love, romance and happily ever afters. A big hairy bear of a man, he lives his life in simple terms. Running his business, taking care of his employees and friends, and having a good time when he can. Simple, easy, uncomplicated.

That is, until he's talked into allowing his business to be the basis of a new reality TV show, and with that show comes executive producer, Annika.

You know the expression "Don't poke the bear"? Well it's Annika's job to poke the bear, and she's got it down to an art. Cool and aloof, she's made a career out of staging things so that her 'cast' have something to react to, and she always gets those reactions on camera. That's the job.

Never before though, has she so badly wanted the bear to poke her back.

The chemistry between Joel and Annika, who at first glance seem like two people who'd be unlikely to ever meet let alone be attracted to each other is undeniable and clear to the reader from their very first meeting, but even that isn't without complications and road blocks.

Firstly, I just love this cover! I kept going back to it whilst reading, it is such a good visual of these two characters. And secondly, I just loved this book! Another winner for Staci Hart!

Joel is the owner of Tonic Tattoo Parlour, this is where Patrick (Tricky) works. Joel and his brother run the shop and it is has been their life since their parents passed away. It is Shep's idea to have their shop become a reality TV show hit. Joel isn't all that keen on the idea, being a private sorta guy, but decides its best they do it before any other shop does. In walks Annika, the Executive Producer for the show. She is classy, and gorgeous and an Ice Queen, that makes Joel want to melt. There are reasons you should never mix business with pleasure, and Hairy and Princess find out the hard way why. Hopefully with a little, or a lot of goo, they can move passed the hurt and lies and come out the other end with a HEA.

Annika is a strong willed woman that has a no holds barred attitude, when it comes to work. Her family are a different matter. Joel is the total opposite, he is a stubborn bear, but just a big softie with everyone. The way these two compliment each other is endearing. I so loved that Hairy came to cheer up Kari. And his gift to Anni after was precious. I know I am going to have a colossal book hangover after this one. I even loved reading the acknowledgements at the end. Staci has a huge heart and it is felt right through this book.

Annika is known for being a bit of an ice queen, but she wasn't always that way. Being in her chosen line of work has hardened her heart in more ways than she thought. But that ice may just start melting when she's set to become the executive producer on a reality tv show about Joel's tattoo shop, Tonic. Joel's got a loyal crew and a huge amount of hesitation about subjecting them all to the public eye. However, his first encounter with Annika has him warming up to the idea.

"But that hasn’t stopped me from wanting you, not since the first time I ever saw your stupid, hairy face. I hate you, and I want you, and I hate that I want you. But I do.”

I loved Joel and Annika. Their witty dialogue and super steamy encounters. Both were strong yet fabulously flawed characters. And Annika's nickname for Joel? I almost died laughing the first few times she said it. They weren't perfect, but they truly did seem to be perfect for each other. My favourite secondary characters were probably Annika's Russian family. Her Papa, Max, I really loved him! I'm also wondering if perhaps we might find out a bit more about Annika's cousin, Roxy. Hmmmm.. Very intrigued, indeed!

“But you are like a great bear, the lumbering beast who has no need to hide, just makes himself known and invites what may come.” He nodded and put a fist to his chest. “I am a great bear, too.” Dina laughed. “Maxim, you are an old dog.”

The pace of the story was just right and the words flowed effortlessly, holding my attention right up until the last page. Fans of beards, tattoos, some light humour and screaming sexual tension will devour this highly entertaining new release from Staci Hart.
