Product Description

Free or not, life beneath the sea in the republic of Itlantis is less idyllic than Aemi might have imagined when she'd been just a surfacer slave. She's been accused of spying for the enemy thanks to her connections with the traitorous Nautilus family, not to mention her own tangled and mysterious family history. Her mother has arrived, and is determined to take over her life. Oh, and someone is trying to kill her. Again.

When Aemi receives word that her best friend might still be alive in a village on the surface, she and a crew of friends set out to find him, regardless of the danger from Nautilus's men patrolling the open sea and the mysterious threats on her life. But the sea is not the only thing that holds secrets.

In this third book, Aemi gets acquainted with life as a Graywater while the elite distrust her, some unknown group tries to assassinate her, Nautilus continues gaining power, and news reaches her that her surface friends may still be alive.

This book has a lot going for it. Aemi finally meets her mother and sister, and must deal with all the politics as her mother tries to do damage control, repair the family reputation, and for a suitor for Aemi. Meanwhile, Aemi tries to learn more about her father, find her surface friends, and try to figure out who is trying to kill her. And of course Nol is not absent in this novel, nor are a few other really important people from Aemi's past.

The only things I didn't like were that Nol is just a bit too stiff in this novel, the senate is useless, Aemi's sister didn't have a big enough role, and Aemi continues to be too harsh with Myo. Also the ending was a bit too abrupt and convenient to setup book 4.

Overall, this was a quick page turner and a fun read. The writing is top notch and several of the characters are well humanized. There is still a lot of mystery about her father, the Dron, the assassins, and more. It flows great from book 2 and continues the story nicely. Looking forward to reading book 4.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good sequel, lacking written integrity. 17 August 2014

I'm really enjoying this series. My only qualm is the same I had with the Frost Chronicles. The pace is somewhat slow and there are times when the surroundings are described but the same words are used so it is hard to get a clear depiction of the world. I would have given more stars to this one but there was quite a lot of space used for repeating (verbatim) Aemi's capture from the first book while she is having flashbacks. Lastly the ending is very abrubt, I'm all for cliffhangers but it was almost ended mid sentence. Looking forward to the next book but I hope some writing techniques are adjusted.

I love her books. Her world building is amazing, and her characters are always interesting and multifaceted. This book is no different. This series keeps you on the edge of your seat. I can't wait for the next one!

Most of this book was flashbacks. Copying and pasting what happened in the first 2. This book was incredibly stale. I do not recommend it.
