Product Description

A story about what it means to be a friend …

Five women, best friends for decades, meet once a month to talk about books … and life, love and the jagged bits in between. Dissecting each other’s lives seems the most natural thing in the world – and honesty, no matter how brutal, is something they treasure. Best friends tell each other everything, don’t they? But each woman harbours a complex secret and one weekend, without warning, everything comes unstuck.

Izzy, soon to be the first Black woman with her own television show, has to make a decision that will change everything.
Veronica, recently divorced and dedicated to raising the best sons in the world, has forgotten who she is.
Xanthe, desperate for a baby, can think of nothing else, even at the expense of her marriage.
Nadine, so successful at writing other people’s stories, is determined to blot out her own.
Ellen, footloose by choice, begins to question all that she’s fought for.

When their circle begins to fracture and the old childhood ways don’t work anymore, is their sense of sistahood enough to keep it intact? How well do these tiddas really know each other?

‘Generous and witty: only Anita Heiss is writing this new, contemporary women’s story.’ - Susan Johnson

I enjoyed the entertaining story of close friends navigating their friendships while managing life challenges. It was interwoven with historical and contemporary facts that informed about aboriginal issues and life; and about other issues like healthy living and social justice. Involving, fun, important.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fresh Perspective on Friendship 29 April 2015
By Kate Oszko - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This is familiar territory in many ways - the stories of five women whose lives intertwine, who fight, but are there for each other, who reach a new stage in their own lives and in understanding the others. As a white fella, it was new to me in that it introduced an Indigenous viewpoint/perspective that I had not come across, relating to family expectations and culture. I enjoyed the writing very much, but some of the characters were a bit one dimensional. Nadine's husband for example was extremely shadowy, and Nadine was (to me) the least sympathetically drawn. Overall, it is a good read, and provides a fresh perspective on friendship.

The characters are brilliant. Anita has managed to show the interface of the friendships where cultural differences live. A great read

3.0 out of 5 stars A story of "Sisterhood" 17 April 2014
By Maggie - Published on Amazon.com

I quite enjoyed the different relationships between the five main characters of this book, however, I felt there was not enough depth to the characters. I was also a little disappointed with the authors quite "pushy" writing of indigenous issues, and the way they tended to dominate the plot in places.
