About the Author

James Thurber (1894-1961) created some thirty volumes of humour, fiction, children's stories, cartoons and essays in just about as many years. A founding member of The New Yorker staff, Thurber has been translated into dozens of languages throughout the world. While growing up, I loved James Thurber's books, so I
bought this book so I could understand the man. It soiled
my belief that Thurber was more sane than Hemmingway.
He was a "dandy" and was flighty and flaky and used and
discarded women like yesterday's newspapers. I got the
feeling that his passion was not the writing, but the fame
and money writing provided him. Reading letters from
his jilted women would have been more interesting, but
they were not included!
