So I am in two mind sets over this book. I have read other people’s reviews stating how they can’t stand Celaena and her holy than thou, I’m the best blah, blah, blah. But what you have to take into consideration is that she is an 18 year old girl that for her short life existence has had it rough. Her parents died from what we can glimpses of horribly, then at the age of 8 she gets saved if you can call it that by Arobynn the King of Assassin’s, who for ten years told her over and over again that she was the best. Now when a young girl who has experienced something terrible, finally has some sort of a semblance of life and is told the same thing over and over again yes of course that is what she is going to know and believe. Yes it can be over bearing at times but you need to look deep inside the girl and see that in a way she has been brainwashed.
But what I found to be the most frustrating about this book was the way she was with the Prince Dorian and the Captain Chaol. You can tell that from the very beginning that Dorian had an attraction to her even when Celaena was covered in filth from the Endovier Salt Mines, but as they bonded and grew closer he eventually feel in love with her, he even admitted it to himself that he did and would do whatever it took to protect her even going against his Father the King. Celaena had similar feelings towards Dorian as well I would go as far as saying love but it wouldn’t have been far. But then she becomes the Champion and she goes stubborn and selfish and says they can’t be together as in 4 years she will be free and has never been free. But then she is flirting with Chaol. So I’m a little confused and frustrated , did she really like Dorian or was it all a lie.
“No fair maiden should die alone,” he said, putting a hand on hers. “Shall I read to you in your final moments? What story would you like?”
She snatched her hand back. “How about the story of the idiotic prince who won’t leave the assassin alone?”
“Oh! I love that story! It has such a happy ending, too—why, the assassin was really feigning her illness in order to get the prince’s attention! Who would have guessed it? Such a clever girl. And the bedroom scene is so lovely—it’s worth reading through all of their ceaseless banter!”
I just loved this banter between Dorian and Celaena and I was a little disappointed at the end when things didn’t work out between them. But fingers are crossed that in the next book, everything will work out.
Caleana Sardothien, young assassin, is betrayed and sentenced to the Salt Mines of Endovier a slave camp. After a year, a Prince and Captain of The Guard come and offer her an opportunity for her freedom, win a contest to become the King's Champion, then after a four-year contract, she will be free and very rich to do with whatever she likes in her life. No more Arobynn’s Assassins, no more Salt Mines a free woman to do as she wills. Celaena thinks she's stumbled upon an opportunity of a lifetime but she soon realizes that things are not what they seem. Someone or something is killing off the other champions, in a gruesome and horrible way.
Between training with Chaol Westfall the Captain of The Guard, trying to keep herself from being killed, from being eliminated from the tests, and Dorian Havilliard the Prince and Celaena being attracted to each other things are becoming difficult and a much higher price then Celaena had being willing to pay.

This was such a ridiculous book. I'm really forgiving with believability, but this was unbelievable even for me. Not only that, but things seem jumbled and confused in way that left me with large question marks in my mind as I read. I enjoyed the antics of the characters enough to finish it, and I didn't mind it... but I didn't like it. I'm not sure if I'll read the others, but Celaena has grown on me so it's possible.

Books of the fantasy genre are not my usual choice but on a whim I clicked on Sarah J Maas's Throne of Glass and I think I just discovered a new guilty pleasure.
This is the first book in the Throne of Glass series although there are some prequels that, with hindsight, I should have read first as they form an important part of storylines that take shape further into the series. In Thone of Glass, you are introduced to Celaena Sardothien, a teenager assassin and slave in the mines of Endovier who is freed from slavery only so she can take part in a "fight to the death" competition to determine who will become the King's champion.
In this story Celaena battles demons (both personal and physical) and uncovers true evil all while making new friends who grow to love her and support her in a way that she has not experienced for many, years. This starts her on her quest to reclaim her past as Celaena comes to terms with who she really is as she steps up and takes ownership of just what she is truly capable of.
I loved this series as it has a bit of everything - magic, danger, love and fantasy. What is particularly refreshing is, as the series progresses, it becomes not just Celaena's story but one that encompasses many, all of whom are vital to Celaena being able to take ownership of what is rightfully hers and - yay for girl power - as this story has it in spades.
If you love fantasy - give this series a go as you will not be disappointed.

I had been holding out to read this book for a long time, it had always intrigued me on the shelf and with my recent foray into YA lit I decided now was the best time to dive in. Honestly I was a little disappointed. The writing was excellent, the story was good but the main character didn't quite hit the mark for me. Where early on she promised to be badarse assassin of deep intrigue she ended up being more of a capable killer comedian. To the point where I thought the author couldn't decide which direction to properly take. There were also some attributes given to the character that came across as more like things the author personally liked and felt would be cool if the character liked too. If that's the kind of thing you can get past then the overall story is pretty fun, world building like the characters could have some added depth but aren't deal breakers.
For the audio fans: Elizabeth Evans was a good choice. She was one of my favourites in Six of Crows and she continued to impress me here. Her narration would be one of the main reasons I would continue on with this series.
Cover: Good character design, just enough mystery. Nice use of colours and fonts to balance it out. I think it works very well as a style that can follow through to the multiple books in the series. However I don't think it reflects what you get with this book at all.
In short: Didn't deliver on the early promise for me but overall an entertaining read.

Very mediocre offering

This is an awful book, don't buy it thinking its a fantasy nivel because its actually a historical romance thinly masquerading as something more complex . The author has piggybacked on the current wave of fantasy novels with strong female protagonists, with her central character described as 'the worlds best assassin' with ongoing hints about a dark back story throughout the book. But sadly it fails to live up to any expecations. All the characters are two dimensional and trite, and the story is extremely weak. I just didn't care about any of them at all by the end. The most descriptive parts of the book focus on what Celeana looks like or is wearing or the increasingly boring love triangle between her, the dashing captain of the guard or the handsome prince. I'm annoyed I spent nearly £5 on it!

Fun protagonist and gripping magic system
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 December 2017Verified Purchase
Throne of Glass has been on my list for a long time and I FINALLY got around to reading it. I really enjoyed it, and binged the last half of the book because it was so gripping.
Celaena, a captured assassin, is blackmailed into participating in a competition to become the King's Champion. If she wins, she'll serve as Champion for four years and then be granted her freedom. But the road to winning the competition is filled with obstacles, not least because someone is murdering all the other contestants. As Celaena digs into the Kingdom's history, she uncovers dark magic that shouldn't exist anymore. Can she figure out how to stop it before the murderer comes for her? Oh, and the Prince is handsome, too. But she can't fall for him. Not after what his family did to her lands. Can she?
I thought Celaena was an intriguing protagonist. She has a lot of interests and she's amusing to read. She does come across as three-dimensional, but a lot of what's made her who she is seems to have happened off-page so I get the feeling I'll have to read the next three books to fully figure her out. I agree with other comments that she bounces around from being deadly and wielding swords to being girly, wearing dresses and swooning over princes. But she's also a teenager, so I think you have to take that into consideration.
The ending was satisfactory and whilst there isn't a great deal of pressure to continue reading the series, it's definitely not a stand alone. I felt like there was a good round up of the competition and the dark magic Celaena found, but yes, if you start this one, you're probably in it for the long haul.
That said, the world is well constructed and I would be happy to read on. Give it a go if you're looking to dip your toe into a strong fantasy world. (Then maybe your ankle, knee... and well, you get the picture...)

I'm genuinely struggling to put into words how gripping and compelling this story truly is.
When it comes to novels based in new worlds I normally struggle to get gripped on the story, but from page one I could easily see the world Sarah masterfully created. And from page one I was hooked.
It's the kind of novel I couldn't wait to finish, but at the same time I didn't want to read it as it came to an end.
Sarah created a new world, one full of mystery and wonder. The story had me hooked so much that I went through the motions with the characters, I laughed, flushed, cringed, and cried throughout.
The third person, head-hopping writing perspective is becoming a new favourite reading style for me, it gave a broader outlook on the story as a whole, and gave a closer look at the characters.
Celaena, she wasn't what I expected, in a pleasantly surprising way. It became quite clear early on that those in her close company could only grow to love her as I did. She was written so well she didn't feel like a character in a story.
I feel like she is a good judge of character, so when she liked someone I was immediately drawn to them, and when she hated someone I felt that too.
“When she missed – well, even the fires of Hell couldn't compare to the rage that burst from her mouth.”
This has to be my favourite description of Celaena written from Dorian's point of view. I laughed, probably harder than I should have, but that moment was completely priceless.
I love Dorian, Chaol, Nehemia and Elena in equal measure. I hope to see Nox again too.
I truly cannot wait to get lost in Sarah's world once more in Crown of Midnight, also, how amazing is the cover artwork on these novels?!

Bad Reviews are missing the point
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 October 2017Verified Purchase
I have read the entire series and absolutely loved it. Yes the first chapter was a little slow but that is because SJM is introducing a new world. She has to help everyone understand it. Secondly everyone saying Celaena is the best then how comes she got caught - that's the whole point and if you read it properly you will see that she has a very good reason for getting caught. The so called "plot holes" are not plot holes, they simply prepare questions to be answered in the next book. Get a couple chapters in to where they prep for the competition and you'll be wanting to know more. The series as a whole is fantastic (It gets better and better with every book) I promise that. SJM always blows your mind. Accept that she has done a more sassy character than most YA books (where would the fun be in repeating characters all the time?). Accept that this is the new world. And if you read Assassin's Blade (mini short stories) then you will see exactly why she is the best if you cannot get past the whole she got caught but had a very good reason thing.
Strong characters. Strong plot (leaves some of it open for book 2). Good pace. Good attention to detail. Just keep reading, I promise you will fall in love with the series.

Weak storyline, but not awful
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 May 2019Verified Purchase
This was entertaining enough that I finished it, but on the whole it felt very poorly thought through and badly edited. The basics were there for a good story and characters, but the delivery was all over the place and the main characters were full of ridiculous contradiction and bad decision making. I appreciate it's YA fiction but it also didn't seem to know whether to its characters like adults or children. E.g. the captain of the guard to a tyrannical king apparently has never killed anyone... how does that make any sense?! Won't bother to read any of the others in the series and am pretty shocked it's as popular as it is.
