She is the Bringer of Death

Cali, a djinni, has sworn to twist the wishes of humans so they die by their own greed and evil. Her latest master is arms dealer David Saqr, a man Cali believes deserves the fate she has in store for him. But this time she finds herself up against Andrew, David's guardian angel.

He is a Protector of Life

Andrew believes David can yet find redemption. He fights Cali for the man's life, even as he tries to persuade her to give in to the sizzling attraction between them. He shows Cali another side of David, and invites her to trust again, to hope. But centuries of being enslaved have hardened Cali's heart—it's going to take all of Andrew's love to convince her to open it and let him in.

This is the third in the series so I’ll be hunting down the other two. This had a few surprise twists and turns. I liked the way Cali twisted her masters’ wishes against them and how bitter she was on the outside, yet still so fragile internally. It would be hard for most to see through her façade, but fortunately, her hero is determined to see the best in her even when she can’t see it for herself - just as soon as he stops her from killing his latest charge whose own heart of gold is hidden so deeply Andrew has to work hard to reveal it.

In Three Wishes, Jenny Schwartz's third book in her Out of the Bottle series, we finally get Andrew's story.

Cali is a djinn known as the Bringer of Death, as a result of her vow to kill every single person who possesses her bottle. Her latest owner is David Saqr, a weapons dealer who has turned down this road as a result of events unfolding in his youth.

Andrew is David's guardian angel, who will do whatever it takes to protect his charge. He never expected to be so strongly attracted to the djinn sworn to destroy David. When another blast form David's past shows up, Miriam, a woman who David rescued when they were both children and since taken a protective role in her life.

Andrew knows Miriam may be the only hope David has of turning from his deadly path, hoping that Cali will see David's redemption and realize that through love everyone is worth saving... even Cali.

Honestly, I really wasn't very interested in the story of Cali and Andrew. They had differences of opinion, some chemistry, a good deal of sex, a few tender scenes, and a change of heart. That's about all I got out of their part of the story, which is disappointing since they are the lead couple.

I was far more drawn to Miriam and David's romance in Three Wishes. These two connected at a young age only to be separated shortly thereafter. Neither one could ever forget the other. Miriam loved David and had a strong case of hero worship, which progressed over time into a romantic kind of love. Her bond to him was so strong, she left behind everything she held dear to confront him in his own world and call him to task for the dark turn of his soul. David always felt responsible for Miriam, watching her life from afar and providing for her in the only way he knew how, with blood money from his arms deals. When he sees her again face to face again, his heart begins to soften and heal, leading him to see the error of his ways.

I did love seeing the many ways that Cali will try to see her plans come to fruition, and Andrew's ways to thwart them. I have liked Andrew since he first appeared in the series, so I was excited to see him finally get his own love story at last. Of course though, I most loved watching David heal from his dark past, with the help of a passionate, strong willed, caring woman like Miriam.

I have to admit, I went back and forth several times as to whether or not I actually liked Three Wishes. I'd read a chapter or two, almost want to put it down, then read a couple more chapters and like those. Overall, I have come to the conclusion, I didn't really like or dislike it, I just didn't feel strongly enough about it to make up my mind about Three Wishes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review posted at Heather's Blog 30 May 2011

Three wishes by Jenny Schwartz
* I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Three Wishes is the third installment in the Out of the Bottle series. This is Cali's story. She is known as the Bringer of Death because every person that owns her bottle has died. She is determined that David will be no different.

Andrew is a guardian angel that is just going through the motions of life. He has ceased to feel anything but that changed when meet Cali. There is an instant attraction between the two of them, if only she will give them a chance.

David is an arms dealer that was given Cali's bottle as a gift. He doesn't believe that she is real until she grants his first wish. He is surprised when Miriam show's up to confront him because he used "blood money" to pay for her education. She is determined that she is going to win his soul back, he wasn't always this way.

Cali has had to do unspeakable things to people at the request of her "masters". She has no control over her life or her actions. She is a prisoner of her bottle and sometimes is stuck in it for years at a time when she is between masters. She feels that the men are greedy and deserve to die so she arranges for their demise, without directly being involved.

She has hardened her heart against everyone to protect herself. Throughout the book, we see her grow and with the help of Andrew she learns to trust, love and have hope again. She sees the transformation in David and wants what he has with Miriam.

The chemistry between Andrew and Cali is electric and obvious from the very beginning. He takes a chance and show's his true self and lays it all on the line for her. He is very angry when Cali won't take a chance on them because she is still tied to her bottle. She gives him hope, something he hasn't had in years and he's determined not to give up on her.

The secondary characters of David and Miriam are crucial to the success of the story. They do not take away from the main characters but add purpose for the actions that Cali and Andrew take. Andrew is there to make sure Cali doesn't kill David but in the process shows her that some people can be redeemed, even her.

I really loved this installment of the Out of the Bottle series. I think that she saved the best for last. I give Three Wishes 4 Flaming Hearts.
