5.0 out of 5 stars Bright multiple setting slim torch
By Sonny on 10 September 2018
I've been using this torch for months now, thrown in my pocket daily. Love that it takes regular batteries. Has multiple brightness settings which is great for preserving battery life and also not blinding you. Will comfortably light up a small room.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good pocket light
Reviewed in the United States on 1 August 2016
Having provided some reviews in the past, I was quiet excited when Thorfire reached out and asked me to review some of their new lights including this PF04. This is just a quick review, so let me tough on some of the key points.

First, I would classify the PF04, along with most of the Thorfire lights as being budget lights. They are intended to provide a balance between performance, durability and affordability. If you need a light to mount on your fire helmet or your carbine this is not the right product (but then, neither is any light in this price range!).

The PF04 is a 2xAAA light which comes packaged in a simple carboard box and sandwiched between two sheets of foam in bubble wrap. Simple and effective. Included in the box are a small satisfaction/customer service pamphlet, owners manual (including specified output and run times), the light itself and two spare o-rings. After playing with it a little I really like this little light! It is impressively bright on high mode especially considering its driven off of 2xAAA only. The threads are smooth and do not appear to be overly oiled or greased with no flashing or swarf present. LED is well centered in the smooth reflector and the lens is reasonable scratch resistant- I'm not 100% of the material but it didn't feel like glass... it also didn't scratch to mild pressure with the tip of my Spyderco VG-10 blade. Pocket clip feels very stout and the reverse tailcap clicky has a positive feel. One of my favorite features for this light is the user interface. Most lights will come on in high mode by default and thats great for many things. A small pocket light, though, I find is very nice to come on in a lower mode. The PF04 always turns on in low mode (rated 1lm). I like that A LOT as it won't disturb your night vision nearly as much if you are just navigating a dark trail, tent or room in the middle of the night. One thing to consider, though, is that when turned on to low mode its not necessarily obvious the light is actually on during daylight.

All in all a nice little light for the price, but I did find reason to mark it down a full star. Perhaps I am being overly critical, but the tail cap on this light is integral to the body tube- it does not screw off. As such it would be very difficult to try any servicing of the tail switch such as cleaning or replacement. Of course, at these prices its hardly intended to be a lifetime investment. I prefer to be able to prolong my gear lifespan as much as possible, though.

Update: Just doing a very quick runtime test on high mode. Using "Kirkland" brand AAA batteries from Costco, about 3 months old but new in package. On High mode runtime is deceptive. Its advertised as 55 minutes in the owners manual. What I am seeing is either voltage sag causing the light to drop to medium or a thermal regulation circuit. Either way, its not surprising as alkaline AAA cells just don't support any significant current. No ammeter measurements due to the fixed tailcap.

I do plan to compare beam/brightness against some other lights and hopefully post a few photos soon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another Great ThorFire Tactical Light - Great for EDC and More!
Reviewed in the United States on 7 February 2017
I bought the PF04 after getting the PF01 and now I am a fan of ThorFire! They make quality pen lights that are affordable and reliable. This is a perfect tactical light for EDC and other purposes. The three brightness settings make it easy to use for various applications. I don't use the lowest (firefly?) setting as much because it is a tad weak, but if you just need a small amount of light I could see it being useful. The brightest setting puts out a good, concentrated beam. The tail switch is easy to engage and you can depress it without a full click to turn it on. I find myself carrying the PF01 a bit more for EDC because I like the smaller size, but I enjoy both of the lights. I can tell where this model has been upgraded with some nice features such as memory, a small heat warning near on the bulb portion, and a higher lumen output. Also, from what I can tell, the batteries last while. I would highly recommend this tactical light.

I have included pictures of the PF04, PF01, and a chinese knock-off version of the PF02 (same dimensions, not the same quality) to show the size difference, etc. I have also have reviews on each.

Update: This flashlight only lasted about 18 months or so before it stopped working. I didn't use it every day and felt it shouldve lasted longer. I tried several different batteries and it wouldn't turn on, so I've changed my review from 4 stars to 3 stars. Maybe it was a fluke though because my PF02 is still going strong 3 years later and I've had a VG15S for awhile now, both are great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great small light that isn't heavy for EDC

Great EDC pen light. My philosophy of use for this is carrying it in the pocket of my work slacks. I need a light that is bright and lightweight for that I have a larger one for jeans. This light throws well and can light a room easily. Outdoors it's not as effective but I have used it to work on a car in the dark in an emergency and it was just fine. If you want a budget and slim light with sufficient brightness for most emergencies this is a great one. The finish wears after awhile though as you can see in the pic. Also, notice the bottom is grippy rubber and very easy to manipulate in the dark or without looking. I highly recommend it for its specific philosophy of use!
