4.0 out of 5 stars Good pocket light

Having provided some reviews in the past, I was quiet excited when Thorfire reached out and asked me to review some of their new lights including this PF04. This is just a quick review, so let me tough on some of the key points.

First, I would classify the PF04, along with most of the Thorfire lights as being budget lights. They are intended to provide a balance between performance, durability and affordability. If you need a light to mount on your fire helmet or your carbine this is not the right product (but then, neither is any light in this price range!).

The PF04 is a 2xAAA light which comes packaged in a simple carboard box and sandwiched between two sheets of foam in bubble wrap. Simple and effective. Included in the box are a small satisfaction/customer service pamphlet, owners manual (including specified output and run times), the light itself and two spare o-rings. After playing with it a little I really like this little light! It is impressively bright on high mode especially considering its driven off of 2xAAA only. The threads are smooth and do not appear to be overly oiled or greased with no flashing or swarf present. LED is well centered in the smooth reflector and the lens is reasonable scratch resistant- I'm not 100% of the material but it didn't feel like glass... it also didn't scratch to mild pressure with the tip of my Spyderco VG-10 blade. Pocket clip feels very stout and the reverse tailcap clicky has a positive feel. One of my favorite features for this light is the user interface. Most lights will come on in high mode by default and thats great for many things. A small pocket light, though, I find is very nice to come on in a lower mode. The PF04 always turns on in low mode (rated 1lm). I like that A LOT as it won't disturb your night vision nearly as much if you are just navigating a dark trail, tent or room in the middle of the night. One thing to consider, though, is that when turned on to low mode its not necessarily obvious the light is actually on during daylight.

All in all a nice little light for the price, but I did find reason to mark it down a full star. Perhaps I am being overly critical, but the tail cap on this light is integral to the body tube- it does not screw off. As such it would be very difficult to try any servicing of the tail switch such as cleaning or replacement. Of course, at these prices its hardly intended to be a lifetime investment. I prefer to be able to prolong my gear lifespan as much as possible, though.

Update: Just doing a very quick runtime test on high mode. Using "Kirkland" brand AAA batteries from Costco, about 3 months old but new in package. On High mode runtime is deceptive. Its advertised as 55 minutes in the owners manual. What I am seeing is either voltage sag causing the light to drop to medium or a thermal regulation circuit. Either way, its not surprising as alkaline AAA cells just don't support any significant current. No ammeter measurements due to the fixed tailcap.

I do plan to compare beam/brightness against some other lights and hopefully post a few photos soon.
