I loved the writing style and the characters views... they were all written so beautifully.
Unfortunately for me, I didn’t love the story itself.
As I was reading it and seeing Ava wrestling with her desire over her intuition I had hoped it went a different direction.
Jesse comes across as a stalker and rich creep.
She said no, multiple times to his advances and yet he still used his sexual prowess to manipulate and coerce her into a distorted version of a relationship.
I disliked the ending where he was making her feel guilty because she found out his lies and he made choices that were bad for him!
She went there to give him that shot and he used that chance to say it was her fault.... sorry dude, your actions and lies caused this, not hers.
This series has a heap of mixed reviews and I can see why. Its something you will either love or hate.
I fell into the former category.
I pick up a book to lose myself in the story, this is not reality. Therefore I can look at Jesse as a sexy as hell, over protective and dominating alpha male, who has set his sights on someone and isn't taking no for an answer.
Ava is on the rebound and is in love after a few short weeks, losing herself and doing whatever he demands. I can be here for that. In real life I would slap her and tell her to stop being so spineless.
I like alpha characters so Jesse had me from the first scenes with his sultry ways. And the big surprise? I picked that up from the first meeting, Ava really is a bit dense.
I'm interested to see where this series heads and hope that Ava stops being so freaking wishy washy
1. It’s like I’m in a relationship with a dozen different men.
2. My beautiful, neurotic control freak
They related so well loved it.....
All I can say is WOW..WOW...WOW
TY.... Jodi for such a great series
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of romance as a genre. But I think stories like this one are why it gets a bad rap.
Long storey short, its a beauty and the beast trope, with romanticised domestic, sexual and emotional abuse.
There is almost nothing that can redeem the themes and characters in my mind...
Jesse Ward is a self entitled prick, who used women to his own ends (and god help them if he doesn't get his way). He uses emotional blackmail and manipulation to a lock Eva into a gilded cage.
And while Ava appears to be a smart, ambitious women in the beginning, she proves otherwise time and time again. Allowing Jesse to bulldoze her into submission every freaking time.
Nope, I'm done with this series. The romanticised abuse in the book killed any kind of fantasy element in it for me.
Reading about Jesse had a permanent smile on my face. Yes he's domineering, bossy, possessive & at sometimes controlling, all of which has my inner girl power wanting to jump up & down, but he's so good that if it was me I probably would have just rolled over & said yes sir. It's clear the way Jesse feels about Ava, even if she can't seem to see it, & even if he doesn't say the words out loud his other words & his actions speak volumes to me.
I really liked the secondary characters. I hated Sarah, which is good because you're supposed to. I loved Kate & Sam & their fun, chillaxed attitudes.
Ava I struggled with & she's the reason I'm stuck at a 4.5 instead of a 5 star. I found her really hard to like with all her back & forth with Jesse. I get that her last boyfriend was a douche but her attitude towards him indicates that she really didn't care so I can't for the life of me figure out why she can't just jump into this thing with Jesse. If his controlling ways were that big a deal she wouldn't have succumbed to his charms at all.
I don't think I can write any more without giving anything away so I'll leave it there & dive into the next book. Although I'm not an Ava fan I am definitely a Jesse fan & now a big Jodi Ellen Malpas fan. Looking forward to the rest of the series - although I may want to dive into my Kindle & shake the crap out of Ava :)

An interior designer is assigned to decorate the property of a gorgeous and domineering man and they find themselves irresistibly drawn to each other, resulting in mega sex marathons.
The good and the bad:
This Man is an example of an author not understanding the importance of creating tension and a sense of anticipation, to creating a sexy page-turner. The book is pretty much back-to-back sex scenes, with no build up to the moments of passion. So instead of saucy scenes being exciting when they come, they become rather dull. They are also rather over the top, with the male protagonist – Jesse – regularly “yanking” his love interest Ava in for a kiss, tossing her about, slamming her into walls etc. I am sure this is meant to reflect the passion of their sex sessions but it’s excessively dramatic, so I ended up getting annoyed.
The sex is also unsafe and unhygienic from the outset - no condoms are used the first time Jesse and Ava go at it, and Jesse goes from having anal sex with Ava straight to vaginal penetration without cleaning in between. I hope Ava doesn't mind getting an infection!
The book starts of off interestingly then becomes boring and picks up again about three quarters through. One thing that is consistent is the repetitive language. After the umpteenth reference to Jesse's "minty breath" and literally - not metaphorically! - being able to see his and Ava's hearts beating, I started to get annoyed and roll my eyes. Jesse must have asthma because he "pants" all the time - one deep kiss and he's gasping for air like he's run three marathons back to back!
As for the characters! Well I couldn't relate to Ava who is grumpy, naive, and - despite having been cheated on by her exes - drops her knickers for a man she believes has a girlfriend just because she fancies him and wants to “get him out of her system”. What a morally-repugnant piece of work! She's also a pushover, relenting to Jesse's desire for anal sex without a complaint even though she is dreading it and doesn't want to do it. Jesse is an irrational, ridiculously jealous, uncontrollably angry, obsessive stalker which – very unrealistically – does not worry Ava or her friends.
Lastly, the ending has a ridiculous twist and unsatisfying ending, that left me feeling frustrated, having invested so much time in the book.
I am disappointed. Yet another kinky book that was full of promise but turned out to be a cheap attempt at ticking the Fifty Shades of Grey box.
They aren't, in fact they are really awful. I've read alot of these books and there are alot that walk a knifes edge in terms of how healthy the relationship is. However the relationship in this book is so toxic they should chuck it in Chernobyl!!
It's unbelievably ridiculous what Ava puts up with and she goes from fuming mad at him to totally in love again in the blink of an eye.
Seriously just don't waste your time...
So i went and got the books and dived in. I was a bit unsure when i fitst started reading Jesse as he is a very dominant and demanding character and not used to being told no, or not getting what he wants. I felt that Ava was very out of her depths and didnt know what to expect from their relationship. After the frist 4 chapters i got very into the book, and could not put it down, i finished the book in 3 days and was very eager to start the next book in the series. I just love the chacters in the book and the chemistry that is between ava and jesse, no matter how much ava treis to deny it or get away from jesse, their is just no esacaping. Jesse is my ulimate book boyfriend, and i find him hard to be repalced at the moment.
The two characters had a good chemistry and the writing and plot wasn't bad and I even took a liking to the secondary characters. I just felt that the story had no build up and I'm guessing the MC Jesse was supposed to come off as charming but for me it just missed the mark.
The Protector was great, I really enjoyed it, but because this is a multi-book story not everything is revealed straight away. Now halfway through book 2 I'm getting to understand Jesse's character a little better. So I'm in for the long haul with this one and that means another book before I can really make a proper assessment of this story.
