Fleeing from the gossip that she had been jilted, Julia arrives at Lanwyn Manor to keep her pregnant cousin Jane, who is quite ill, company. But whatever she may have expected of the change, she had not expected to be attacked at the local inn in her uncle's absence before even reaching the manor, nor to face threats from various quarters when she chose to remain... Isaac leads a busy life, helping his 3-minute-older brother to look after the latter's mine, with no time to deal with his own long-deserted mine, let alone to hunt for a wife. Or so he had thought - but he seems unable to clear his mind of thoughts of the woman he had rescued at the inn on her arrival. Unfortunately, his brother has the money and position that he lacks, making him the more desirable suitor, and seems eager to pursue her. With unrest in the area due to the high unemployment resulting from the closure of the mine inherited by Julia's uncle, will Isaac be able to work out who is threatening Julia and causing other trouble? And will he manage to overcome the seemingly insurmountable barriers between him and Julia?
Though not a heavy read, this came across as quite dark at times - from hints of danger from the mine workers, to hostility from the housekeeper, to suggestions of malpractice or even danger from the accoucheur. Despite that, though, the encounters between Julia and Isaac (and sometimes others) lightened things up enough to make for a good read. I was a bit disappointed that it felt like there were several loose threads left hanging, though I don't want to enumerate them for fear of spoilers - possibly a future book will deal with them? Overall, I enjoyed the gradual development of the romance and the unfolding of the mystery, but found the dialogue nothing particularly special and not a lot of character growth. The ending was good, though, ignoring the aforementioned loose ends. I'd really like a sequel that followed up the mining side of things as well as looking at their married life - and perhaps a book that could make me like Matthew? Summary: not my favourite book by the author, but I hope to read more in the series in future.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Historical Romance at its Best
Reviewed in the United States on 14 January 2020Verified Purchase
Sarah E. Ladd puts a lot of research into her books before she ever puts pen to paper and it shows. It brings the reader into that world, and her characters always make you feel so emotionally invested in them.
I like that Isaac Blake is a different kind of hero. While his twin brother Matthew is richer and more charming, Isaac is quiet, loyal, and caring.
Julia Twethewey just wants to find where she belongs. She tries to help people but is turned away numerous times and is even threatened.
This book has a Gothic feel, and I love the mystery throughout it. It is the second in The Cornwall Novels series but can be read as a stand-alone.

The Thief of Lanwyn Manor
The Cornwall Novels #2
By Sarah E. Ladd
It is 1818, and Julia Twethewey needs a distraction for her heart's been broken going to Cornwall, England is just she needs for a change and a chance to begin again. Unfortunately for Julia, her first encounter in Cornwall is being attacked in the local pub by bandits. Coming upon the scene, Isaac Blake stops the bandits from doing more than steal the few possessions Julia has in her bag.
Isaac works hard to keep Wheal Tamsen, the mine that his brother inherited, productive and profitable, but there is not enough work for all those seeking employment. And with Bal Tressa shut down indefinitely, the Lambourne family is not the most loved in the area as the mining families suffer the loss of work. The attack on Miss Twethewey was a result of the shutdown, in Isaac's opinion. Everyone knew that the Lambournes' niece was coming for a visit. What Isaac didn't anticipate was that Julia Twethewey was about to steal his heart.
Coming to stay with her cousin as a companion during her confinement, Julia didn't anticipate becoming the new object of her aunt's matchmaking. And Aunt Beatrice is looking not for a match of the heart but one that will elevate Julia's social and economic standing. And in her eyes, the only possible suitor worthy of her designs is Matthew Blake - Isaac's older twin brother.
Noises in the night, missing silverware, jewelry lost, a cousin ill, with no one else to turn to Julia finds herself confiding in Isaac. And if the answers they seek remain hidden, all could be lost, and their hearts may break.
The second book in Sarah E. Ladd's Cornwall series follows the oldest daughter as she finds her way in the world. Julia is an interesting character who comes into her own in this book. In The Governess of Penwythe Hall, we met Julia and the Twethewey siblings following the death of their father. Again there is a mystery surrounding the situation and a bit of romance that makes for an enjoyable read. Those who have not read the first book will have no problem getting into this book as it could easily be a standalone title. An excellent read and one that would lend itself well as a book club selection.

Another hit for all fans Jane Austen & Jane Erye...

I love Sarah E. Ladd and her books! She did not disappoint in this 2nd addition to the Cornwall series. The intrigue caught my attention and kept me reading to discover the "who done it?" The the gentle romance betwen Julia & Isaac reminded me Mr Darcy and Elizabeth for all you Pride & Prejudice fans. Took me a while to remember who Uncle Jace & Aunt Cora are from the first book, seven years have past. It can be a stand alone novel but catching up on the first book helps understands Julia's need for approval and quiet acceptance. Love the story that kept me reading to get to the end! Can't wait for the third book...

Julia is leaving a disappointment in which a suitor has suddenly dropped her for another. Julia suffers highway men stopping her carriage. At the inn where they go, Isaac Blake rescues her and scares off the robbers. The bartender who has managed to get his gun while Isaac distracts the robbers who want to 'talk' to Uncle William. Isaac Blake is the younger brother while his brother Matthew Blake has the main mine and Tregarthan Hall, their childhood home that Joseph Blake, their father, built. Isaac does the mine management while Matthew handles public things. Uncle William has closed his mine which employed quite a few people. There is ill will toward Uncle William from the miners. Aunt Beatrice wants Julia to give her regard to Matthew because Matthew is the elder brother and heir. However, Julia is drawn to Isaac and also tries to get along with the local people. She participates in the local sewing circle and visits the children. There has been a mine disaster in which Isaac's best friend dies. The widow of Isaac's friend is quite resentful and lets Julia know. Also, there are unexplained thefts from Lanwyn Manor. Hester Prynne, a local love and past love of the previous owner of Lanwyn Manor, knows about a hidden treasure in Lanwyn Manor. There is a resolution of the thiefs and other interesting plot twists. Isaac does wind up with enough assets to ask for Julia's hand in marriage just before William and the family are about to return to London. Jane and her baby stay behind as a chaperone for Julia and Isaac. Sarah E. Ladd revealed in a Facebook chat that she researches her books for approximately 4 months. Her research about the mining industry is evident. I found the plot to be quite engaging!
