Product description

Product Description

For years the king bottled up the city's crime by pitting the thieves' guilds against each other. A balance enforced by ruthless double-dealing, blackmail and a special cadre of secret watchmen.

Now, armed with a mysterious substance that turns men into ravening ghouls, the Count is prepared to upset the balance. Installing himself as Underking, master of all crime in the city.

Thief battles thief as the city threatens to erupt in violence.

Then Heden returns from the forest. Prepared to exact vengeance against the bishop, he finds Vanora caught up in the Count's lethal scheming. Before he can act, he must ensure her safety.

He can stand against the count, the guilds, even the bishop.

But he cannot do it alone.

While 'Thief' is the title, the book still focuses on the priest, Heden, and his ongoing multiple conflicts with powers both arcane and political.

I am still enjoying the frequent references to Heden's old 'off camera' exploits as a Ratcatcher, although it can be a bit of a Deus Ex Machina it does make character introductions a lot more fun. I like a book that isn't afraid to keep the reader wondering about some things and doesn't feel the need to explain every little thing.

We didn't get to spend much time with the main villains, so they felt a little shallow compared to some other characters, but there are some I am definitely hoping we find out more about.

I am looking forward to the next book, 'Fighter', and what it might uncover.

Once again Colville has evoked a very unique fantasy setting using very relatable and well-troped tools. Everything is familiar, with an undercurrent of uncertainty and flourish that makes the magic feel actually magical again. Gone is the predictability of R A Salvatore, or the formulaic intrigue of Feist.

Ratcatchers continues to be a series that I can't stop reading.

Once I started reading I could hardly put it down.

Colville has a very direct writing style which is both refreshing and very enjoyable to read.

I definitely recommend to all fans of fantasy.
