This quick evening read was sweet, funny and touching. Can a 45 year old woman who does not want anything to do with a cowboy fall in love with a 35 year old cowboy? Amy goes out to a bar with her niece, Jessie, to help Jessie forget about her ex-fiance. Amy and Jessie see Luke, who Amy considers a fake cowboy, near the mechanical bull. What transpires from there, the connection and the fake engagement will hold your interest until the very end. This story is about following your dreams and how family either supports you and what you want or think they know what is best for you and try to manipulate you. Family is sometimes twisted that way. I loved Grandma and Grandpa and the fact they still had romance, banter and love after a lifetime of marriage. Aunt Barbara was a quirky character that was a crackup. Niece Jessie was a hopeless romantic that wanted her aunt to fall in love. I love the way Amooi develops his characters and weaves his story to bring the unlikeliest of characters together. I’ve read and enjoyed some of his other books and jumped at the chance to read this one before it was released. Although I received a copy for free before release, I also bought a copy.
Amy met Luke at a Western bar. Amy had gone with her sister. After a few shots they met Luke. He was about to ride the bucking bull. Amy was sure that she could do much better than the fake cowboy. But she lost that bet and had to kiss him. After her grandparents saw the kiss and ring on face book they insisted she bring him for Grandpa's birthday. She decided that he was an out of work actor and she could pay him to pose as her fiance. But Amy got more than she bargained for. I have read most of Mr. Amooi's books. This one is my favorite. Originally I bought them because of the titles. I have never been disappointed.
One of the biggest issue I had with it was how the main female character would come up with stupid ideas about the guys job. Met him in a country bar and decided he worked there and his job was to mingle and flirt with the female patrons. Then when that idea fell through, she decided he was an actor because she saw him coming out of a theater. She kept running with that idea for most of the book. She had excessive attitude - almost to the point of being hostile. Near the end of the story she used her period as an excuse for her bad behavior. It seems to make her hormonal.

The light hearted romances by Rich Amooi are great fun. Light reading at it's best. I always wait eagerly for his next novel.
I'm a California native, and it surely doesn't hurt that Amooi's books take place in California and places that I've been to. But if you're not a Californian, you'll still love his books. This one was fun and really makes me rethink my previous aversion to cowboys. It's the thick southern drawl that I dislike...not the actual cowboy himself. Not that anyone really cares. ;-)
