The plot line in one line:
A madly-in-love couple who fell apart and divorced after suffering a miscarriage, remember why they fell for each other in the first place and finally grieve on a three-day road trip.
The good and the bad:
Kate Meader writes thoroughly raunchy sex scenes but while this book does feature a couple of bonking sessions, they aren’t to her usual level of frequency or graphicness. No, this book is much more about emotions.
As Grant and Aubrey drive across America to visit her pompous and troubled family, a year after divorcing, they finally talk about what happened 18 months previously, when their unborn child died.
Through their flashbacks and current-day heart-to-hearts we learn how these two people from very different upbringings, with subsequently different ways of dealing with life, ended up being the perfect pairing, crushed by a miscarriage. At the same time – thanks in no small part to Grant’s determination to reunite with Aubrey - the two quite quickly reconcile.
This isn’t the sort of book that keeps you on the edge of your seat as you wait for the “big moment” they get together, in part because they have a pre-existing relationship and are having sex from the outset of the book. But it is beautifully written as is usual for Meader and kept me turning the pages.
It’s a quick and sweet read with just a garnish of raunch. I recommend you read it but only after you have read the other books in the series because: a) there are spoilers in this book, and b) the others are just a touch better.
