I’ve come to enjoy my little trips back to Red Hill Springs and the growing Sheehan clan. Knowing that the final book in this series comes out in January makes me just a tidbit sad, I don’t know that I want to let them go. I sat idly by while twins Jordan and Claire snagged up the Sheehan brother’s in a whirlwind of romance and family. But what about the girls? Dear sweet Wynn, couldn’t wait to get out of Red Hill and Alabama altogether. She had dreams, big ones, and nothing was going to hold her back. Including a crush turned blossoming spring romance with Latham Grant her senior year. So what is a girl of ambition and a bit of infatuation to do? Run. And don’t look back. I mean, look back at your family and whatnot but yeah, the rest forgetaboutit. But what does that same ambitious girl do when she has all she dreamed of, and more, but is also floundering in who she really is and the knowledge that all she dreamed of may not actually be what she wants? She comes home. Not expecting to see high school flame but there she is. Just another layer to her cake of shame really.
Wynn let herself, her strait arrow goals before life self, fall into the same trap women find themselves in generation after generation. Lust v Love. Ambition v Companionship. All the this versus that you can think of. She falls in love with the politician she works with, they make an amazing team in and out of Washington. Until she finds herself pregnant as he is marrying someone else that she didn’t even know existed. Yeah, all the versus. Can we say jerk wad toad nugget. Yes she made mistakes, so did he, but in the end. . .jerk wad toad nugget. The thing is, if all of this didn’t happen then Wynn may never have found her actual calling in life, her happy place, and re-found the love of her life. So, while I might despise Preston (now say it with some snark) and his toad nuggetness, if it wasn’t for him Wynn would have never found herself.
Let’s face it, this series has brought me a new author that I’m really enjoying and can’t wait to see what she does next. However, this book left me a little laggy in the grand scheme. Spoiler alert, Wynn comes home pregnant. Bear with me through this a moment. There is no baby bump when she comes home. The book seems to time warp in places as a week goes by but her pregnancy goes a month in that span. In what feels like was a season (ya know 3ish months) her pregnancy jumped 6ish months. Example: The mayor offers her a seat on the council and she is going to meet with him in a few days time, however her pregnancy jumps what seems over a month in that week before she meets with him. Which is it, a month or a week? The timing plays into whether I’m irritated with insta-love or not. Did they fall for each other over a season or over a pregnancy? I mean really each could be considered insta-love but ya know. There’s kinda a big difference there. So, pending determination of insta-love and how long she is actually pregnant I feel like Wynn is really doing her part for the Sheehan Entourage. I am both excited and saddened for the next book in the series, all about Jules.
