Halfway through I was convinced this book was the first or one of the first efforts of this writing couple.
The characters are in the main unbelievable. The idea that a professional single mother would take in an extremely vulnerable and at risk young woman is beyond belief.
I persevered with reading but found the first half slow and confusing mainly due to the fact I had begun to question so much of the writing and the characters actions.
The pace picked up and became much more of a read maybe two thirds through
I enjoyed this last part and finally found Nicci French the author. Still not certain about the ending though or Sam's lack of keeping the police in the loop....
I have enjoyed every previous read by Nicci French but this was by no means their best.

I had a lot to do but made the mistake of beginning to read some of the last chapters of the book. Big mistake! Still there an hour later and unable to stop reading. The authors had done it again. This excellently written and superbly woven plot had kept me riveted to the end.
I will definitely be looking for their next book and making sure I have an undisturbed block of time to read it.
Like the football match 'you think it's all over' - and then it isn't and there's yet another twist to untie. Brilliant
