I have to say I absolutely loved this book. Within a few pages I was hooked and couldn't wait to see what would happen to the trainee district nurses, Agnes and Polly and their formidable superior, Bess Bradshaw. I was also completely engrossed in the patients' stories which featured in the book. In particular, reading about the harsh lifestyle these people led, still suffering several years after the Great War ended, made me realise how lucky we are today.
This is a fantastic read and I can't wait for the next book in the series. Read it - you won't regret it!
The main character for me is Agnes Sheridan as she arrives to start her district nurse training. To say Agnes is not comfortable with her new surroundings is an understatement as Leeds is so far away from her comfortable home in London. But Agnes has a tragic past to hide and a family who has turned against her at her time of need. Each nurse in the home has secrets and as we get to know the patients they are looking after we get to know the nurses.
I loved this book as was excellent from beginning to end. Every emotion spilt from the pages which made this book extra special.
The Nurses of Steeple Street written by Donna Douglas is a wonderful book and one I am happy to recommend.
Like the Nightingales series I immediately felt myself drawn into the lives of the characters, not just Agnes, Bess and the other nurses, but also the families of Quarry Hill that she encounters on a daily basis who despite their living conditions were determined to make the best of what they had. They might not have much but they had their pride and so they fought hard against Agnes and some of her methods until she finally proves herself to them. One of my favourite characters was Isaiah Shapcott who certainly made quite a first impression on Agnes but also underwent a total metamorphosis under Agnes' care.
A great start to a new series from Donna Douglas that includes everything I've come to expect in her saga stories, family drama, heartbreak, love and of course humour. And the good thing about reading this story a year late is that I can continue straight away with the next book District Nurse on Call.
