This is an extraordinary book. It has changed the way I see things, which is what a great piece of literature should do. I have never enjoyed dinner more when I finished this book, or been more grateful.

Terrifying view of what happens when government realises it's run out of cash to fund its election promises and society implodes.

Some people might find Lionel Shriver's writing style slow, but I find her books fascinating and this (being a slow-mo train wreck of the USA going into economic collapse) is the most gripping yet. If you like incisive, finely teased-out internal reflections, with larger social implications and a heavy twist of satire, this would be a great read for you.

i found it thought provoking and kind of frightening and pleased I will not be around to see if it happens in the future but, I also found it slow going.
