‘The Greatest Gift’ is the latest novel from fabulous Australian author Rachael Johns. Johns, who was initially queen of rural romance has really made a name for herself in general fiction. In fact her previous two ‘life-lit’ books, ‘The Patterson Girls’ and ‘The Art of Keeping Secrets’ were fantastic and two of my favourite reads of last year.
‘The Greatest Gift’ deals with motherhood in all its forms and what some will do to become a mother. Tackling the emotional journey of two women - Harper Drummond, a career focused radio host, happily married woman who has decided she doesn't want to have children and Claire Beggs, who after childhood cancer was told she would never be able to conceive a child.
When Harper interviewed a young couple who had been unable to have children, along with another woman who was invested in their future, Harper is motivated to donate her own eggs to help someone conceive. It is here she is introduced to Claire and Jasper and they set things in motion. However, the emotional journey that follows will change their lives unexpectedly.
‘The Greatest Gift’ packs an emotional punch it is just a beautiful, inspirational, heartbreaking story. Rachael's writing is flawless and alive. She handles the sterile medical procedures with heart, and the reader is invested in all of the characters.
And as often with Johns’ books, make sure you have the tissues handy however the final chapter is fantastic and a lovely surprise. In my mind this is her best yet.
