How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

The English Girl.

This book seemed awfully dragged out and needlessly long. The descriptions of crossing the desert were actually very underwhelming - I assume they were supposed to let us 'feel' the heat and desperation, but they just felt as if it was writing by numbers. Both Joan and Maud were distinctly unpleasant people, with Joan in particular getting in the way and putting people in danger simply because she wanted to find herself. This book is horribly close to being a pot boiler, and that's a shame, because Ms Webb has written some corkers. Hopefully this one is just a blip on the radar.

Disappointed

I did not realise I had ordered a second-hand book - I thought I'd ordered the £4.99 new paperback.
I received a copy of the book yesterday and quite honestly I would have been ashamed to put it into charity shop bag let alone charge money for it. It is grubby and obviously pages have been turned by someone with dirty fingers.
I like Katherine Webb books and this one may be good but I certainly will not be reading it from this copy.

Won't forget this (background)story!

Loved it!
I even considered buying the real diary of Gertrude Bell, on which this book is sort of based.
Why did I know of Lawrence of Arabia and did not know about Gertrude Bell?..

Reading about Oman - very enjoyable. Liked the characters, but at times felt the story was very drawn out and slow going.
