Beautifully written, we follow Celie's heartbreaking journey through life as a woman of colour in the US. But this novel is so much more than that. Whilst it's confronting and harsh realities were not easy to read, we also see a woman come to terms with who she is as a person and spiritual being.
Very vague memories of the movie adaption filled my mind when I purchased this book. I don't remember much expect feelings of horror and sadness at the confronting images it presented... mind you I watched this when I was maybe 8 years old. So 12 or so years later, here we are. And let me tell you, I was not expecting this.
I loved this book. I love Celie. I love Alice Walker. I loved that it was confronting and harsh, and was a reflection of Walker's own spiritual journey. I love that it was about family, a sense of belonging and hope. I love that Celie's character discovered who she was and found peace and joy.
I also hated it. Abuse is not an easy read, it is not kind or warm. It is vicious and sickening, but to see a beautiful character make her way out of something so terrible was heartbreakingly beautiful to read.
It has been my pleasure to read this.
