How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

revisiting an old favourite

There are some books which resonate forever - I read Bird of Night, and almost all Susan Hill's other work, when first published and have never forgotten either the reality of living with a man so haunted as Francis nor the Aldeburgh setting. (I made my first visit there after reading this book.) I'm re-reading it as a book group choice (mine) and surprisingly it hasn't dated. Susan Hill is a brilliant writer, especially when creatng characters beyond her experience (a mad homosexual poet, the soldiers in Strange Meeting, etc.) Her sense of place and of desolate emotions is superb.

I'm a real lover of Susan Hills work, mainly reading her ghost stories, however this book blew me away, how subtly she weaves human relationships. Read it, you don't be disappointed
