Why Need a 5V 3A Power Adapter?
1. USB3.0 port on laptop/desktop provides only 900mAh of current, it's really not enough if you have multi USB devices.
2. Some devices require more power such as external hard drive, one external hard drive requires 0.5A to 1A of current, you can't plug other devices in if only 900mAhs
3. with the power adapter, you can charge the phones/tablets (iPhone requires 1A, Samsung require 2.1A)
4. It can charge your phone even if the computer is off. If without the power adapter, the USB hub will be shutdown when the computer is off
What is include:
1 x USB 3.0 Hub
1 x Power Adapter

Each individual port (4) can be turned on/off via button.
Comes with Australian power adapter; and also a charging port. Charges note 9 well; laptop can be off. Yay.
Very worrying that the power pack is that cheap and gets so hot.
It would seem the power supply is underrated for the unit (fast charge at 2.4A plus another phone or powerbank etc means you're drawing 4+ amps. Seems like a major flaw in the product.

The ports have a blue light to make it easy to view in the dark. The lights remain on when the computer is on, including sleep mode, but they are off when it is shut down.
I don't think I want/need to deal with it like that,so it was returned. I gave it 2 stars because it worked nicely when it worked.
Manufacturer emailed me to send me a replacement to test again. I am only willing to revise my previous review after test using it again for 1 whole week.I am convinced that the first one I received is defective as this replacement one work flawlessly for more than one week with no issue at all. When compare similar (identical)products that have the same features, this one works fine but is much cheaper. Will buy again for sure.
I tested this by running a benchmark test on a USB 3 flash drive both in the hub and plugged directly into the computer's USB 3 port. There was no performance degradation by using the HUB. If I ever need another USB 3 hub, I'll buy another one of these.
One of the features I like about this is that although you only have to touch the button to power on the port, you have to hold it down to power it off. This prevents you from accidentally disconnecting a device you are using.
Update 2/27/17 - I just ordered another one for another computer.
I have my VWii drive stealth modded so I can leave it on all the time. But for anyone who doesn't want to do that this is nice to be able to leave both drives plugged into the WiiU all the time and just power on the one you need with a button.
I did note turning power ON for each port requires only a momentary push of the appropriate button, but to turn off you have to hold the button down for a few seconds, which is mentioned in the manual. This is a plus so you don't accidentally turn of a port by accident when adding or removing another device. Great value for the functionality with the only negative being the power supply connection to AC not being 'thin' enough to allow use of adjacent outlet on a power strip. I have short extensions to get around this problem but wish manufacturers would all jump on the thin power supply bandwagon when the supply directly connects to the AC source.
If there's one quibble I have, it's that the power cord is about eight inches shorter than I'd like. Not that it doesn't work for me where I have it, but if I had that extra bit of slack, I'd be happier. Oh, and that USB cable from the hub to the computer is pretty thick. Like thicker than Ethernet cable thick. Not a problem, just one of those things you look at and wonder if you're running a washing machine from your USB port.
Oh, and that little charging port that is always on is very nice for charging a phone or tablet without looking for an outlet. Love that too.
All in all, probably the best USB hub I've owned.
So I pulled cable from the hub and put it in directly to the card, BAM...the drive pops up.
HUB IS POS. Edit: Hub is OK. I was wrong
The drive that could not be seen was a format OSX 11 didn't want to see....NTFS. I have a utility on my other macs that allows NTFS format to be seen by OSX and I thought i had it on this box as well.. It took crawling under the desk and switching cables to Win 7 box (worked OK) and then to W10 box (ditto) to show the canary feathers on my lips.
The issue was not disc format but a really antique pci-e spec in which the USB3.0 card had to be plugged into in this 10 year old mac.
I am going to add aftermarket rubber feet because it is glass smooth on bottom, and only other gripe is the power cord has a very small exposure but I over lapped the insulator with heat shrink tubing.
Edit 1: After writing this review the manufacturer contacted me and offered to replace the hub. My replacement arrived about a week ago and, at least out of the box, it works as you would expect. I have adjusted the title and rating of this review accordingly, however I will return in a few months to report if the hub is indeed still working fine.
Edit 2: The replacement unit failed within only a few weeks in the exact same fashion as the first unit.
