Please understand I played Sonic racing so much on my mac, that I was able to best every world record for every track currently posted on youtube. No kidding, no trolling, no jokes. I played it for 100's of hours. I will be returning sonic team racing to amazon most likely this week. First issue - All motorcycle's have been removed.. WHY? (for example, shadow is now in a car just like Sonic's). All transforming has been removed. In other words, all they have done from the first two games is REMOVE.
ALL tracks (21 total) bar just one (20 ready to play), are unlocked from the start, giving no incentive to unlock tracks.. Mario kart is the same, which actually annoyed the hell out of me, but every grand prix you won at least unlocked a lot of parts automatically. In Team Sonic Racing, you earn credits which you spend on random vending machines and get cosmetic or, (much less often), performance parts. It's a lot more tedious and I haven't received anything of note yet, even though I have already raced and won all grand prix in hard mode.
The graphics are 30 FPS and Mario is 60.. However they ARE at a solid frame rate at least.. and quite pretty.. it makes you wonder how they can do it in handheld mode and look razor sharp, where as so many racing games on switch look incredibly blurry to even approach 30 FPSl. Meaning? Some devs just can't code well on switch. Sega can. Still, Mario is a solid 60 FPS and looks just as good graphically. The feeling of speed/rush is just not as high as sonic all stars, nor indeed Mario kart in 200 cc mode.
Boost at race start system is convoluted and requires annoyingly precise timing.. the most obnoxious boost start of any kart racer in the last decade. (you need to press with each countdown number then hold when you press on 1.. You can achieve 3 levels of take off boost). In theory it's great, as if you miss one you can still get some boost on the next number, and so on..But you also lose all if you mistime the press on "1"..
Hours later and the countdown timer itself still feels unpredictably unnatural to me.
I don't pull the start boost off every race unlike all other kart racing games, and also unlike sonic all stars, you can not restart a track in a grand prix, ONLY the entire grand prix itself.
There is an adventure mode which focuses entirely on the team aspect, and with the AI, I honestly find it a chore.. In handheld mode, I find it downright confusing to keep track of the team.. You CAN unlock most extra parts and cosmetics by completing adventure mode though. I'll look forward to refining my team skills and playing co op online with strangers, where perhaps the game may bring the much needed lift out of the by the numbers boredom it suffers from now.
*There are only 21 tracks.* Yep. 21.
Mario Kart has 48 tracks. More than double. Again, bear in mind, when sonic all star racing was released, in my opinion it obliterated all releases of mario kart to that date.
There are some recycled tracks and they picked the worst ones.. they have new dazzling high def graphics but identical layout to all stars. why not pick the BEST ones from sonic all stars for example?
It seems almost every single time I am excited about a switch racing game, it comes out and I am disappointed.
it does handle very well like all other sonic racing games, so that's great. Drifting and boost as well as air tricks are smooth and intuitive..
But it does absolutely NOTHING better than Mario Kart 8 deluxe nor the two previous sonic games - and that's the main problem. Here in Australia it is AUD 50$ (i believe USD 40 in North America region).. and I got Mario Kart for $60 AUD brand new.. Just $10 more for more than DOUBLE the content, as well as a BATLLE online mode. So why would ANYONE on switch choose Team Sonic racing? I can't understand why Sega did this.. Had they just done something like the previous game(s), but in HD and with all the tracks from both sonic all stars and sonic racing transformed, add a dozen brand new tracks, kept motorbikes/other vehicles and all characters, it would have been killer..
Mario kart has 48 tracks and so many online modes (and always people to play with).. and because of this, as well as the 60 frames per second and better sensation of speed, it's simply just the better buy.. there is no comparison. If tis game was 29 AUD and 19.99 US i would be much more forgiving.
For non nintendo users who do not have the previous sonic games, I give this game a 6 out of 10 for a kart racer.
Compared to MK8 dlx, a 4/10
Compared to all stars and transformed, a 3/10
I am very disappointed to those who rated it high, and am glad some publications have been honest and given it 5/10, o 2.5 stars out of 5, and so on.
It's not that there's anything particularly broken with it, it's that it's inferior to the two previous games and is thwarted by mario kart in every single way, which was the opposite when all stars first came out (vs mario kart at the time).
If you don't own Mario Kart, get that instead. If you DO, i say wait for crash team racing.
How they could fix this: TRACK dlc, at *least* 10 new tracks, that have to be UNLOCKED by beating certain races.. free download.
More and different vehicles.. especially bikes.
Just make it as good as All stars! I am playing all stars on my mac at a solid 60 FPS and it feels so much better!
To sum up for those who don't want to read the whole review:
It does absolutely nothing better than the older sonic racing games, and in MANY ways is much, much worse. The team mechanic will be a very individual thing, some will love, some will hate. I believe many will just play grand prix and also play single NON team races online, which is an option.
Mario Kart beats this game in every way. Bang for buck, sheer amount of courses, online battle mode, and 60 frame per second super smooth graphics.
My recommendation if you just love Sega and have an Xbox 360 or PS3.. buy sonic racing all stars AND sonic racing transformed.. You can get both for around 46 AUD total, so less than this one game.
With those two games, you will get way more tracks (sonic all stars alone has 24, not counting the unique ones in transformed!), WAY more characters, way more vehicles.. more challenge as you need to unlock tracks and grand prix by WINNING.. and ALL you will lose is the team mode which I guarantee 95% of players won't care about anyway - yet you gain SO much more. :)
Really, avoid this average, overpriced cash grab.
