About the Author
Currently Eve is 75 years old, in her fortieth year of teaching. Her style of yoga emphasises self-care, care for our environment and loving kindness practice. Before moving to the country, Eve founded two yoga studios, Sydney Yoga Centre and Simply Yoga. Writing is an equal passion with yoga for Eve. She has two published books, 'Teach Yourself Yoga and 'The Art of Adjustment', many yoga-related articles, and her weekly blog, 'Yoga Suits Her'. A memoir is in the planning/writing stage. Eve and her husband joined with two other couples-long-term friends- in 2009 to live communally on the Midcoast of NSW. They wanted to adopt a gentler lifestyle and support each other's endeavours as they aged. Some of the communities they participate in are a writers' group, book club, choir and palliative care volunteering. Eve has three grandchildren, all under 5 years old. You can find her blog at https: //eveyoga.com.

Teach Yourself Yoga, by Eve Grzybowski, is a rich little book. Not so little either: its 160 pages contain much basic information and instruction about the origins, purposes and practices (many and varied) of the ancient Indian art of yoga. Not so new either: its content, except for a brief preface, is exactly as it was when first published 23 years ago in distant 1997. So it is now a “classic book” (ie older than the average memory span), republished as an e-book but also available as a printable – or printed – book (remember those?). It deserves to be republished. Eve’s 40 or 50 years of practising and teaching yoga have stood her, her writing and her many pupils in good stead. The book’s breadth and depth provide a solid, still reliable guide to any beginner – or worried and wistful former practitioner. I miss only more encouragement of inversions, the classic head and shoulder stand: they are represented only by Viparita Karani (also called “Legs Up the Wall”). But perhaps avoiding the more challenging inverted poses is best, as a safeguard to the delicate business of old and unwary necks. I’ve got one. And to tell the truth, I miss the upside-down poses more than I practice them.

This book is not just a resource for everyone who intends to switch offline and create their own, quiet practice on a solid, frequent basis, it also serves as inspirational mentoring source for yoga practitioners and teachers. Your mentor Eve's message: Keep it simple. Keep it grounded in the practice of moving into alive stillness. I bought this book over ten years ago and I have been using it as my home port ever since. It's the place I always go back to, to connect to the pure directions of an intentional, self-honouring yoga practice. It's been my island in the vast ocean of yoga, which I am forever grateful for.
