The book is about Teofila and Elijah’s journey through life together, over about a 20 year time period. During this time both characters go through so much together....
Now I’m not going to go into their story or give anything away. You must read and experience this amazing book for yourself.
I’m not going to lie there were times when I found the pace of the story lagged a little, mainly in the first half, but the second half certainly made up for it. I am still trying to come to terms with everything that occurred in the story. What I really liked was how things weren’t fixed immediately, they were dealt with in ‘real’ timeframes making the story so believable. In fact the concepts within the story are real and valid.
I liked both Teofila and Elijah but grew to be wary of Elijah and wanted to tell Teofila to stop and wake up to herself! 😆 Being that invested in a story is a good sign I believe.
I am looking forward to reading Millicent’s story, I didn’t dislike her in this but she wasn’t my favourite character. She intrigues me though and I wonder what we are in store for with her story.
There were so many aspects of this book that I adored. The female characters are all exceptional and Rodriguez has such a clear vision of each one. I couldn't get enough of Teofila, her mother, or her best friend, Miley. They were strong women who loved their people fiercely. They were loyal, dynamic, and graceful, even in their pain.
The book spans over many years, but it flows perfectly and never skips a beat. It's everything you could need in a love story and then some. But it's so much more than a love story between a girl and a boy. It's also a love story between a girl and herself. Finding herself, loving herself, choosing herself. It's a story we all need to read and to embrace and, in many ways, emulate. This may be a story, but it's so much more than words on a paper. It's raw and painful and real. It hurts and it heals. More than anything, it's important.
It deals with heavy topics and they are beautifully and compassionately executed. Teofila and Elijah's love story is truly one for our time, with relevant issues that many deal with on a daily basis. Even if you have no experience with the issues and traumas that the characters face, you will still find yourself wrapped up in their stories and if you do face similar issues to them, I hope her eloquent words and powerful characters give you strength and healing.
Teofila’s journey with Elijah spans decades. Theirs is one literally written in the stars. It makes you believe that fate can make things happen and that things do happen for a reason good, bad, silly and crazy because it all defines the person who you will become. Cynthia’s telling of their story is one so honest that there were times I was left speechless and breathless only to find it all again a few pages later.
It will leave you asking yourself, “Do I take a left turn here and see what fate has in store for me?”
This is a new to me author. I’ve had this book on my shelf for months and finally decided to dive in. I was hooked from page 1.
I’m not sorry that I did but I was 10000% not prepared for the anxiousness and the emotions I had while reading this. I was not prepared.
I really enjoyed this authors writing so I’d like to read more of her but I don’t know if my heart can take it.
