Can someone be headstrong? Take Corrie Caters, for example. When the world says no - in particular, the guy who left her on the altar - Corrie says go. But she can always blame her mom and dad. Well, can't we all? When Corrie takes her murdered boss' job as tax commissioner, his grave isn't even cold. But the chance to have the money to move out of her parents' home and maybe even buy a new car, and finally show the world she's brave enough to do it, might possibly outweigh the fact that someone is out to make sure the county's next tax commissioner - that's her - rests in peace. Despite all odds, Corrie has to show that she can rise to a challenge, even if it means she'll be paying one too many trips to the emergency room to prove it. Corrie has to solve a mystery in the making, and if she doesn't do it soon, the ending might just be about her loved ones kneeling by her gravestone.
A quick reading mystery about a young woman rising to meet a challenge despite the odds, TAXED TO THE MAX is set in a humdrum property tax office in the middle-of-nowhere, Georgia. The colorful characters, the simple lives set against the machine of state bureaucracies and politics, make us feel that no one, no matter how unglamorous, is insignificant. And that's what a character like Corrie Caters is all about. Selfish and selfless at the same time, she is complex and admirable. The bevy of supporting characters are all well-drawn as well, and we even feel a little sympathy for the bad guy, which is what you want in a good read.
TAXED TO THE MAX has some slow moments that last only 1 or 2 pages: There were one or two many descriptions of the customers Corrie serves in her duties. However, as I reflect upon it, should the book have omitted them? Perhaps not. Perhaps it was important for the author to set the stage and say that despite the harbingers of doom, life goes on. Even if someone's out to get you, you still have to persevere and do what's right.
A quick and satisfying mystery with a good ending, I recommend TAXED TO THE MAX.
