After reading The Legacy I had to follow on with this one. And like The Legacy, I could not put it down. Excellent story, all such different characters and 'visiting' of the main character from the first book was good as Freedom Stubbs was a favourite. Not at all what you would have expected from a Lynda La Plante book - not her usual crime series genre. Thoroughly recommended.

I am a great fan of Lynda La Plante. I really enjoy her police novels, both Tennison and Anna Travis and was looking forward to The Talisman. I was massively disappointed. I was prompted to check up on the fact that I had not mistakenly purchased an early Jeffrey Archer. The family Stubbs, Romany origin who own this so-called talisman are sketchily drawn and their interminable progress through life is whistled through so in short bursts that you begin to wonder how it can have been extended to 8 books. Alex Stubbs goes to prison having confessed to his brother Edward's crime of killing his father. The reason is to allow Edward to go to university. In prison, apart from developing a hatred for Edward, in no more than a couple of paragraphs, he reads up on accountancy and becomes a top quality financial genius. Edward, in about the same few words, becomes a commercial genius with criminal activities. The story drags on introducing new characters/relatives, not one of whom can you possibly develop any affinity for. At the end, it seems the subject of the talisman is suddenly remembered and with one deus ex machina twist, whoever is left lives happily ever after. Trouble was, by this time I would have preferred the unpleasant bunch to have been incinerated with their manor house. If you want a book to occupy hours and hours when you have nothing better to do, this is it. You get plenty of words for your money, but nothing to compel you.

I read the first part of this saga, about Freediom a romany gypsy, and Evelyne his lady , their hard times, struggles etc and how he fought to become a boxing champion, all utterly believable - I enjoyed it so much I immediately bought the Talisman on Kindle, I cannot believe it was written by the same person, it is almost from a different genre, and seems to have no relation to the characters and the story I first enjoyed! Utterly unbelievable, and so many coincidences ! I really believe it would have been better to end the story with the first book. Awful. Wont put me off Lynda de Plante though, she is far too talented! Just hated this book

After reading the Legacy, I couldn't wait to start the Talisman! What a difference between the two, its killing me with boredom. I have to finish it otherwise I would be annoyed with myself but I've got to be honest its just rubbish! Our Lynda has let us down on this one.

You need to read the Legacy first to get the full impact of this amazing pair of books. I found myself gripped with the first book, getting to know the characters and where the story was heading. I couldn't wait to get started on the Talisman after reading the Legacy, found the 2nd book even better and certainly didn't want it to end. Action packed from the beginning to the end, an amazing story. Loved it.
