Taking a Shot is a spin-off from the Portland Storm Series of books from Harlequin’s past line, Blaze. If you’ve read those you will have met Brett already, but if you haven’t you can read this as a standalone, although why wouldn’t you want to read more hockey romance and gain a better understanding of Brett and where he came from?
Brett is a player down on his luck, scandal, gossip and some really bad decisions follow him wherever he goes. Being given a place on an up and coming team means a chance to rebuild his career. He went in with the best of intentions, he was going to work hard and get himself back in the game. What he didn’t expect was a chance encounter with Chelsea London.
Fed up of being the good girl, Chelsea just wanted a night of fun, to forget her troubles for a while. No names given, no strings, just sex and freedom to do something for herself. To rebel against her life just a little. Brett gets sucked in, their connection erupting from the page. Little did he know she would turn out to be the most off-limits hook up he’d ever have. He knows he shouldn’t see her again but it’s as though there’s a magnet between them that won’t let go.
The premise is brilliant, the combination of humour, flirty banter and passionately written love scenes are written to perfection. I really love Brett, he is such a good-natured, honest guy who made some mistakes that cost him dearly. His character is very likeable and you really hope he gets the happy ending he deserves. Chelsea is very headstrong and I loved her attitude. Together the spark is there, the pull they have for each other is so cleverly written the reader just falls for them as they fall for each other. The unfolding of their romance is beautiful, heartfelt and believable. Taryn Leigh Taylor wins every time when it comes to combining intelligent dialogue, sharp banter and swoon-worthy romance.
This is one of my favorite books of 2018 so far!
Taryn Leigh Taylor is quickly becoming a one-click author for me because her books just never disappoint. I don't enjoy hockey in real life, but holy cow do I love her hockey books and heroes! I read a lot (and I mean a LOT) of romance novels, and Ms. Taylor's books stand out to me as always being funny, realistic, and heartfelt; they never feel cheesy or forced like some books in the genre can be. And whoa baby can she write some sexy, sexy love scenes. Sex in books is a take-or-leave thing for me these days because all of the scenes are pretty much the same thing, so I find myself skimming over them, but not so with her books - even Ms. Taylor's kissing scenes make my pulse pound, she's that good at writing them. Another thing she does well is sprinkle humor – both the laugh out loud and the subtle kind – throughout her books. I highlighted at least 25 parts that I wanted to go back and re-visit once I'd finished and even on a third go-through while trying to write this review, they still crack me up.
Chelsea is my favorite kind of romance heroine. She is a total hot mess at times as she tries to figure herself out in her personal life, but she's also completely capable and competent when it comes to her job. I know that sounds like it shouldn't make sense, that it shouldn't work, but it does and it makes her realistic, relatable, and so incredibly likable that you can't help but root for her. I just adored her from the moment we heard about her checklist. Watching her trying to be brave and different was both fun and awkward because I identified with her so much and I found myself just rooting for her to get it all right. Thankfully, Brett Sillinger is a heck of a fabulous book hero and he sees and likes Chelsea for who she is, not who she is trying (and sort of failing) to be. I also love that, even though they have crazy hot sex, they also build a relationship – a solid friendship – along the way. They don't go from sexy to love, and I so appreciate that.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is new to Ms. Taylor's writing because this showcases her writing talents beautifully. I would also recommend this to anyone who likes a spunky heroine, a hero in need of redemption, and/or an unlikely pairing that you can't help but love from the very start.
