I was hoping Ms. Tan would grab the rock-star genre and give us something new. (The $6 price point for a kindle download seemed to indicate that level of writing). This book is actually an heiress romance, based at a family mansion, which involves a charismatic rock star. It felt loose, without support or tightening from an editing team. The characters felt careless, not fully conceived, and they are hard to like (especially the main character, with the jarring name Rickanna, a Los Angeles-based entertainment industry businesswoman). At times the tone of the book is bizarrely instructional, sort of big sister-ish. (Again: where was her editor?) She talks about writing the book in a series of neighborhood coffee shops, and that sounds right, with all those ambient noises and subconscious distractions.
My own preference is to avoid reading dual POV books, especially when one of the characters is male. In general, I think women write first-person from a male perspective poorly. (I cannot wait for the dual POV trend to end). In this book, Axel's longtime best friend does not understand what he sees in Ricki -- that is a tip-off that the character is inconsistent and half formed.
Finally, I am over books where the two main characters a) jump into complete intimacy within the first two hours of meeting each other, then wonder afterward what came over them; b) make pheromone sniffing, panty-slicing, couture dress-destroying love in a limo; c) know full well they are equals as attractive, intelligent human beings and socio-economic differences between them are not relevant, then learn beyond the moment of passion, they are, which really, they have known all along. I expect more than formulaic and cliché scenes when I read a book by Cecelia Tan. She has been so much more than that in the past.
TTL is the first of three books, and has a teaser for the second book about Rickanna's younger sister, Gwen, at the end. I did not take the time to read it.
Taking the Lead is her newest millionaire/billionaire BDSM erotic romance set in the world of rock and roll and the motion picture industry in Los Angeles. Ricki Hamilton is a motion picture industry heiress who lives a life that probably less than half the 1% can relate to. But trust me, you'll be able to relate to her. She's inherited, along with her sister, her grandfather's fortune as long as she does two things: holds a job that is not in the family company for three years and personally, along with her sister Gwen, manages the family dungeon. Right. See, her grandfather liked a little kink in his life and started a dungeon in the basement of the house so that he and all his wealthy friends could play and get their kink on, away from the prying eyes of the public. The girls must maintain and build the membership, schedule and run the parties and keep everything stocked and ready.
Let me tell you, you don't want to forfeit that kind of inheritance, whether you're into BDSM, or not and Ricki's not into it--until she meets a certain dominant rock star.
Enter Axel: Wet dream of wet dreams who becomes smitten with Ricki in a limo on the way to the Grammys. He's supposed to take part in a publicity stunt where he kidnaps his date, Ricki's friend, but he makes a spur-of-the-moment decision to grab Ricki instead. And, you guessed it, wackiness ensues in the limo--BDSM wackiness--and the relationship is kindled.
Axel's not your typical alpha male romance dom and that's what I really like about him. He's sweet and sensitive. He really cares about Ricki. Make no mistake, he takes charge and knows how to play rough, but he's sensitive to his partner's needs and wants. In a nutshell, he's a man, not a caricature of someone's fantasy of a dom.
And that's because Cecilia Tan knows what she's talking about. Writers of fiction make things up and she's making this story up, but she has a real understanding of BDSM, not a fantasy/web-researched understanding, and so the kink is natural and strikes a sympathetic chord in both the characters and the reader.
This is a male dom/fem sub story and I like my kink the other way around, but I found it both hot and engrossing. In fact, I lapped it up with a spoon and am now waiting impatiently for the next book. If you like your romance to make sense and your sex to be authentic, as well as hot, you'll like Taking the Lead. And let me tell you, if you can get this jaded erotica writer to love a romance novel, how must true romance aficionados feel about it?
The main character Ricki is somewhat hard to understand, but she has her opinions and sticks to them. She wants to succeed on her own merit in a world dominated by men who'd love to discount her, so she is driven by rules that don't necessarily make sense to anyone else. That's OK though- they are her rules to live by.
Axel, on the other hand, is an easy one to love. He's a hoot. And he is captivated by the lovely Ricki and has to win her over in the most delightful of ways.
I was a bit worried that this book was going to turn into another predictable slog through the BDSM dungeon, and I was happy to see that it did not. The sex club did enter into the story a bit, but it was more of a background issue. The story was much more involved than that, thank heaven.
The gradual discovery of the truth behind family history gives the story depth and intrigue, and it helps us to understand Ricki's personality.
Cecilia Tan is terrific at tweaking our feelings throughout the book. One minute we're melting under Axel's sexy ways, and the next we are squirming and yelling out, "Oh ick!" when we encounter Ricki being nearly accosted by her creepy lawyer. Brava, Ms. Tan!
