Including the Harry Barnett and James Maxted trilogies this is 15th book that I have read by Robert Goddard. And I will keep coming back for more with three already stockpiled in my reader.
Perhaps with the exception of Maxted all stories so far have had no real, pure heroes but instead flawed main protagonists and some badly so. Each time Goddard identifies a main character early then unbolts the trap door and lets him fall. Not everyone has a soft landing. [OK Harry Barnett got lucky!]
Most of those that I have read so far are partially, if not totally, placed in time periods more than a century ago. So nothing is instantly available and movement is slow at even horse driven speed. That adds to the tension.
TAKE NO FAREWELL has many twists and turns as it unfolds through a narrative that is centred completely on the main protagonist but introducing letters and documents made available as a vehicle to explain events he has not witnessed. Adding to his despair and frustration while those events continue in his ignorance.
In short another excellent book

Book, beautifully written.

Always brilliant, and “not put downable”! I learned the phrasing “had been” and “was” why writers use this, and the difference in English. Prompted me to look it all up! I find it irritating, the use of “had been”. I find myself paraphrasing the writers’ prose if it used a lot. Robert Goddard has to be rationed by me.....I just can’t put the books down, which means all essential routines suffer! The solid substance of his research, settings of time, era, place, historical facts, interwoven into the story and characters. Consistency. Brilliant. His hard work is amazing.

Enjoyable but...

An enjoyable read but would've benefited from being about a hundred pages shorter. I found it hard to understand the two main characters. Why if Geoffrey was so desperately in love with Consuela was he so easily persuaded to turn his back on her? It seemed so out of character. Why was Consuela so adamant in refusing to see him when she had urged that her daughter contact him for help? And why was she so unconcerned and uncooperative throughout the court case? Was she resigned to her fate or supremely confident that she would be acquitted? Have I missed something?

Goddard at his best

Main character plodding along in life? Check. Events in the past coming back to haunt him? Check. Flashbacks to weave said events into narrative? Check. Everything not as it seems? Check. Scenes in italics when a journal is being read? Check. Exquisite use of language? Check. Yep, it's another Robert Goddard mystery/thriller/historical fiction novel.
Goddard's grasp and use of English is a joy to behold; broad enough so that the odd word makes you think, but without ever showing off to the extent that the reader needs a dictionary to hand (no problem anyway if you're lucky enough to own a Kindle!). Take No Farewell is a fairly long book, but Goddard's flowing style and excellent story telling ensures that it never drags.
I rarely give a 5 star rating, and nearly knocked it down to 4 due to an issue with the main character, Geoffrey Staddon. As an architect who has designed and built a number of impressive buildings, I would expect him to be a clever chap. However, at times he proved gullible beyond belief. This was obviously required to make the plot work and I suppose Goddard would say it's part of his character, but it seemed a bit convenient. However, in the end I rated the book on my overall experience of it which was first rate.

Usual RG Story Ab Fab stuff, just ignore his prologue
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 November 2014Verified Purchase
I have read a few of Robert Goddards books and they are all in a similar theme, with very believable characters which are thrown into a situation where they find they are compelled to become amateur detectives. This is over simplifying the stories of course, but this book is superbly written with all the usual RG twists in the tail.
This story is set in the twenties, with plenty of action with murders betrayal , divorces and lost love.
All good stuff, don't let the first few pages put you off, I have found this with RGs books before they tend to have a few pages of nonsense before the story proper kick starts.
