Including the Harry Barnett and James Maxted trilogies this is 15th book that I have read by Robert Goddard. And I will keep coming back for more with three already stockpiled in my reader.
Perhaps with the exception of Maxted all stories so far have had no real, pure heroes but instead flawed main protagonists and some badly so. Each time Goddard identifies a main character early then unbolts the trap door and lets him fall. Not everyone has a soft landing. [OK Harry Barnett got lucky!]
Most of those that I have read so far are partially, if not totally, placed in time periods more than a century ago. So nothing is instantly available and movement is slow at even horse driven speed. That adds to the tension.
TAKE NO FAREWELL has many twists and turns as it unfolds through a narrative that is centred completely on the main protagonist but introducing letters and documents made available as a vehicle to explain events he has not witnessed. Adding to his despair and frustration while those events continue in his ignorance.
In short another excellent book
