4.0 out of 5 starsProbably the best Assistant-Activated switch with energy monitoring.
Reviewed in Australia on 8 July 2019
So close. Yet so far.

This product has it all. As a product solely on it's own, it was easy to connect, simple to set up, and works flawlessly with Google Assistant.

Pros:
* Easy to set up.
* Linking was simple with the Google Home app.
* Convenient on/off switch that's easy to manually control.

Cons:
* Bulky.
* You cannot reset the useage counters without fully removing and adding the device again if you want to test another appliance.
* Did I mention bulky?
* No memory when changing power points.

A few things that would make this device amazing:
1. If you can reset the counters/info via the app.
2. It had a memory module of sorts that stored information (such as Wi-Fi etc)
3. Dual usage timezones rates (to work out cost effectively)

It works as intended and would highly recommend for the right price (<$30).

Handy little product but if you have two power points you will loose access to one of the outlets as the plug ‘real estate’ is larger than I thought when looking at the pictures of it online

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great

I was an avid user of Belkin Wemo smart switches (I had 7 in total) until they left the market a year or so ago. As such, I decided to give the TP-Link Smart Plugs a go. Have to say I have not been disappointed - so much so that I now have 9 of them spread throughout the house. Unlike the Wemo's I haven't had any issues with the TP-Link switches becoming unreachable. The TP-Link's simply work - and work well. They are almost instantaneous when you switch them on or off via the app. They also work well with Amazon Alexa (I haven't tried them with Google Home yet). I currently use them around the house for such things such as:

1. turning the beer fridge off Sunday night and turning it back on again Friday morning so I have a cold beer when I finish work for the week (saves a fair bit of electricity);

2. turning the decorative lights on and off to a schedule in the kids bedroom.

3. activating the garden lights at sunset each night via Stringify;

4. being able to remotely power cycle a secondary router I have on the home network;

5. when Christmas comes around, set the Christmas Tree lights to turn on and then off at certain times.

In short, I'm extremely happy with them. I'm just hoping that TP-Link releases their dimmer light switches in Australia soon so I can convert the light switches in the house.

1.0 out of 5 stars High pitched whine coming from plug
Reviewed in Australia on 1 September 2020
Verified Purchase
Have you ever been relaxing at night and then hear a faint, very high pitched electronic hum? I remember the first time this happened to me, it was a $5 USB phone charger I'd bought from a petrol station. Well, lesson learnt I thought to myself as I chucked it.

Unfortunately this TP-Link HS110 emits the same sort of extremely irritating high pitched electrical whine. I noticed it immediately after plugging it in and isolated the problem to the lights, as the sound changed in harmony with the flashing of the setup lights. Perturbed, I continued the setup (easy enough, TP-Link's apps are excellent) and hoped that once the lights were solid green the noise would go away. No such luck.

In summary, if this plug is going to be anywhere near your ears and you have decent hearing, it's not worth owning. A real shame because it seemed like such a bargain compared to the other offerings on the market at time of writing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't stick to its own schedule
Reviewed in Australia on 3 June 2019

I purchased this for a heater in my kid's room, it's fairly easy to setup and worked well for the first six weeks or so, but recently it has stopped turning off when it is meant to. Every day is has the same schedule where it is meant to go on at 6pm and off at 7am, the schedule hasn't changed at all, but over the past week it has stopped turning off in the morning. When I remember, I turn it off manually through the app and so far, it has been turning itself back on as planned. I haven't changed anything in the app and it's in a spot that has a good wifi signal so I don't think it's user error.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good product, but ultimately couldn't use it for my application.

I have a lot of TP-Link Kasa devices in my house and i have been a big fan of them. I bought this one for the energy monitoring functionality as i wanted to monitor how much energy my 3D printer was using... Unfortunately when plugged into this device it caused occasional power to the 3D printer to cut out for a split second, printer would reboot and ruin my prints. Ultimately I had to remove the smart plug and will find a different use for it. I can't see it being a problem for something like lamps or similar where tiny cutouts in power wouldn't be noticed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very happy with this product!

I really like the KASA ecosystem. Must buy when on special. The energy consumption information is handy to know, however after a few months of ownership I couldn't really care about it. I guess it could be useful for troubleshooting?

The switch light is nice and lets you know when the connection to Wifi is lost (light turns red). I'm using this to turn on my coffee machine each morning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best smart plug with energy monitoring
Reviewed in Australia on 30 October 2020

We now have 14 of these to monitor electricity usage by device and we now have exceptionally low power bills. What is missing is the ability to group the devices and see power usage across the entire home in one set of numbers, rather than having to harvest the details device by device and then sum them to see what is happening. So a server side summary in KASA would make these devices even better. Also the smart power board is missing power monitoring so we are forced to buy long power boards to install the fat devices to monitor each usage in a group like washing machine, spin dryer and vacuum cleaner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for showing power usage

I have two of these, one on a pool pump and one on a double door refrigerator and can see my refrigerator is using 2.93kWh per day on average which is more than I would like...might be time to get a more energy efficient one.
I haven't tried them will google or alexa yet because I don't want to be accidentally turning off these two devices - I am only using them as connected devices to my phone to allow remote viewing of the energy figures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very bulky. Hard to use wall socket right next to this. But works well.
Reviewed in Australia on 17 October 2020

The app is easy to use. It is easy to schedule what you need to. Working with google home made it better. I can just voice command to turn off everything before sleep at night. However, the bulkiness of it meant that it will prevent you from using the wall socket next to it. It is very tricky to make it work. Do consider this before you buy.
