Great NAS but we are a MAC environment but its DSM operating system doesn't work for Macs as well as it does for PCs. The main issue is that remote on-demand file access NOT available for Macs - only Windows. That means you can't access files WHEN you want them. You need to keep full copy of them on your local device, which defeats the purpose of having a NAS.
Synology doesn't mention this limitation in its marketing. It's buried as a footnote, if you dig deep enough. Supposedly version 7 of DSM will resolve that but people have been waiting years for it so not sure it will ever happen. Meanwhile Macs have to access files only via a web-interface from offsite locations..
The setup is supposed to take 10mins, and I had stuck at 95% for hours. This is due to one of the disk (Toshiba N300 4G made in Philippine) has bad sectors. After remove the disk, the setup is completed quickly
Back in the day I had an Apple Time Capsule for doing Mac Time Machine backups. Then Apple got out of that business, and I went on a search for replacements. First I setup an old MacBook Pro as a server. That worked well, but it had a few disadvantages: It added some clutter to my office (a Mac and external hard drive). It didn't have a RAID drive for data redundancy. And all of the configuration had to be done via the MacBook Pro. This means that hiding it away in a closet wasn't practical.
In order to address those issues, I decided to try the Synology DS720+ NAS. I had never used a NAS before, and I was concerned it would be difficult to setup. I'm happy to report it was quite easy. I would say it took me about 5 hours to setup, and learn about its Time Machine and media serving capabilities.
It's been up and running flawlessly for about a month now. I have 3 Macs that are backing up to it on a regular basis, and I'm using its Plex server for media sharing. It's all working great, and I never have to mess with it. Also, it's so compact that I have it sitting in a network closet. I have it plugged into a CyberPower UPS that provides it with backup power in case of a power failure. It even communicates with the UPS, and does a controlled shut down in case of a power failure.
