This release was recorded in beautiful and historic Heinz Hall, home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. In his fascinating and scholarly notes, Maestro Honeck gives us great insight into the history of both pieces, and describes how he conducts and interprets each. He reminds us that the Eroica was a bold departure from earlier symphonies, a dance symphony with dramatic inventiveness, full of new elements that had never been heard before. He quotes Beethoven s student Ferdinand Ries, who wrote Beethoven played recently for me (the Eroica) and I believe both heaven and earth must tremble when it is performed. Honeck puts his own inimitable stamp on this interpretation, giving the listener a chance to experience the novelties of the Eroica as if hearing it for the very first time. This release is the eighth in the highly acclaimed Pittsburgh Live! series from Reference Recordings. The previous release Shostakovich 5/Barber Adagio won the Grammy in February 2018 for Best Orchestral Performance and Best Engineered Classical Album.

I expect great things from Reference Recordings and mostly they deliver in spades. Sadly, this time the result is not so good. Firstly, the Strauss Horn Concerto is excellent. Now to the Beethoven, the recorded sound seems a little rough, doesn't matter what system I play it on. The most irritating thing is the conductors habit of "fiddling around" sort of micro managing every little nuance. I'll only play this disc again for the Strauss concerto. The other SACD's of this conductor, who I usually admire, are on hold. Disappointing to say the least.

So glad I came across the reviews of this wonderful recording. Incandescent First Movement, wonderful clear detail (save only the timps which seem to have needed harder sticks). But forget HIP. Speeds are close to HIP performances and clarity means many details normally unheard are present even though full size orchestra. Only problem is that you seem to need to order it from the US. Horns are wonderful in the Beethoven and the Strauss concerto, intelligently programmed, is sublimely played. Definitely one to keep.

Manfred Honeck und seine Pittsburgher ist eine frische, dynamikreiche und überaus präzise Eroika gelungen, die nach leidenschaft klingt. So schroffe, wie Peitschenhiebe ausgeführte Staccati mit sofortigen Wechsel zur lyrischen Motivik im ersten Satz habe ich noch nicht gehört. Bravo! Außergewöhnlich auch die Leistung des Hornisten beim Hornkonzert von Strauß! Die Aufnahmetechnik mit Ihrer durchsichtigkeit gepaart dennoch mit sattem Klang finde ich überragend! Ein ausgesprochen sehr gute, die unzähligen Aufnahmen der Eroica bereichernde Aufnahme und Referenzcharakter beim Hornkonzert.
