Henry Hunter, aka Henri Hesse, was caught between a rock and a hard place because of one mistake when he attempted to cheat His Majesty’s Exchequer of duties owed to it and to defraud the other beneficiaries of his late aunt’s will. The ramifications of his actions were far-reaching and heartbreaking.
A recommended read.
A book that is wonderfully composed and is a very enjoyable read.
Firstly, this work, as well as the earlier Gerlis novel in the same genre The Best of our Spies, would benefit from detailed editing to correct typos, as well as some incorrect tenses and omissions of both the definite and indefinite articles from time to time.
Secondly, the denoument is rather messy and contrived and therefore not in keeping with the balance of the work.

The action switches between London and various Swiss and German cities. Some of the passages are extremely exciting with, obviously, those which take place in Germany the most thrilling. There is one moment of shocking violence which reminds the reader that The Swiss Spy is not a Boys Own story but a novel set during the most brutal conflict the world has known.
The author has researched thoroughly, particularly the geography of a number of European cities, some of which I'm familiar with. I repeat my assertion that Alex Gerlis must have seen the 1960 film Circle of Deception because his two novels so far have captured the tough cynicism and paranoia of that movie admirably.
BUT he came to the attention of the Russian Intelligence service, for much the same reasons. So when they realise, the British start using him as a back channel to feed the NKVD with stuff they should know, like, for example, that their ally Germany is planning to invade the Soviet Union.
But not all Germans are happy with this bonkers plan, so they want the Brits to know, and the Brits want the Russians to know, but the Russians don't believe it so they are not preparing for it.
It's a bit tangled - who knows what about whom? In fact it's very tangled. And of course it doesn't end happily. But it's a great story
I thought this was an extremely well written book.
The main plot, their are many sub plots, centres around a double agent and the efforts his British handlers go to. Their aim being to deceive the Russians, Germans and Swiss. If I say any more I will give The game away and I wouldn't want to do that. So if you like your spy drama fast moving, intriguing and enjoyable, don't hesitate find the book and read it.
