Swimming with Bridgeport Girls: A Novel Kindle Edition
“Ray Parisi is making a spectacular mess of his life. . . . Tambakis keeps the humor from getting too broad and Ray from getting too sympathetic, though the reader usually roots for him anyway. His final confrontation with [his ex-wife] feels messy but true, just like a good Springsteen song. If this were a Springsteen album, it would be Devils & Dust: partly set in Las Vegas, it evinces hope and humor but is dark and gritty at its core.” —Kirkus Reviews
“Tambakis’ first novel tackles some of life’s toughest moments with humor, wit, and Ray’s endless charm.” —Booklist
“Swimming with Bridgeport Girls is a sad, smart, funny-as-hell novel with a broken heart that beats powerfully between the lines on every sad, smart, funny-as-hell page.” —Jonathan Tropper, author of This Is Where I Leave You
“Ray Parisi is an unforgettable character. His story demonstrates the terrible compatibility between the faith and idealism required for gambling, and the faith and idealism required for love. Anthony Tambakis’s Swimming with Bridgeport Girls brings its reader along on an incredible journey from casino to casino making the romantic impulses of a gambler feel like one’s own.” —Natalie Portman, Academy Award–winning actress
“This is the funniest book I’ve read in a long time—a bighearted story about one man’s quest to save his ruined marriage. Ray Parisi makes one terrible decision after another, but I never stopped cheering for him.” —Jason Rekulak, author of The Impossible Fortress --This text refers to the paperback edition.

Ray and L, his wife, er, now ex, were married and in love until his gambling problem got the best of him. And his debt took a serious toll on their finances and his ability to think straight along with ousting him from his job as an anchor at ESPN. Ray will stop at nothing short to win back L’s trust and love. She has moved on in life and love. Her new beau, Boyd, is quite a bit older and has most definitely usurped Ray’s role in every way. Living in his house, treating his dog as his own and worst of all, claimed the love of his life. Ray seethes at the very thought of Boyd and his wide variety of nicknames for him will have you rolling. Ray has made a nuisance of himself and L is on the verge of taking out a restraining order against him.
The very thing that got Ray into trouble, gambling, (and being accused of infidelity), is what he is desperate to try again, to regain his standing in an effort to convince L to come back to him. With the help of something from his past, he has the perfect solution. What transpires next involves a cast of characters that you won’t want to miss. There are several who have my heart but Renee is one of the best on the written page. She is a sweet young girl whom Ray befriends in Las Vegas and central to his story. Boy oh boy can she talk. Her colloquialisms alone are worth reading the book.
While Ray is quite the character, there is no doubt that he has a sensitive side. After all, he is relentlessly chasing the love of his life to right his wrongs and preserve their future together.
Heart, humor, and astounding writing and characters make SWIMMING WITH BRIDGEPORT GIRLS one of the very, very best. I hope that Mr. Tambakis has another book up his sleeve.
I fell in love with Ray over and over again, even though he was a mess of epic proportions, because haven't we all known someone like Ray or maybe we are like Ray ourselves.
This is an over-the-top, gut-wrenching, pee your pants, edge-of-your-seat, grenade to the heart novel that will make you root for the underdog while wanting to whack him upside the head.
I tip my cup of coffee creamer to this outstanding author and I congratulate him on his well-deserved place on the shelf, next to all the other great writers in history!
A fantastic summer-read that keeps you engaged page after page. A must-buy and enjoy!
Really fun, really enjoyable read. Highly recommend.
